    RPG theory: in-game balancing

Making a replacement character would not be "fun" for me, especially if I spent a good deal of time coming up with the dead one. But I can do that in between sessions.

    RPG theory: in-game balancing

It can be, but it also depends on a lot of factors. How hard is it to make a PC in the first place - will it annoy someone to have to do it again? Is the risk of death implicit in play (ie, will it happen randomly, or is it more dependent on player choice)? Does the GM specifically expect a...

How do you feel about stretch goals?

Anything that doesn't simply increase the size of the book risks significant disruptions to the project, in the form of unexpected costs and just being a different beast than publishing an rpg. Rpg campaigns can offer backers the unique opportunity to be memorialized in a project via an NPC...

What game is the best simulationist game?

If GURPS isn't the best, it certainly tries the hardest.

Recommend me a RPG for reading.

For horror investigations and/or the Mythos, you can't beat The Fall of Delta Green.

5e rule set for Call of Cthulhu

I will point out that the weakness of that edition is that there are only 2 classes.

Please Just Play the Adventure (One Shots)

And to break the 4th wall when necessary. In a con game I think it's acceptable to say "this is the adventure, and I don't have time to prep something else."

The many types of Sandboxes and Open-World Campaigns

The subsidies for filming there are incredible.

Does Star Wars work well with Sandbox campaigns?

With the Star Wars setting I think you'd have to be as precise with time as with location. You have some pretty powerful NPCs who are making lots of changes, while other planets seem to not change at all regardless of the era.

Why the focus on *geography* in RPGing?

I was enamored with Hyboria as a teen, but as I accumulated information I realized he just grabbed place names from all over.

Why the focus on *geography* in RPGing?

It's traditional: not only in the games themselves but also fantasy literature. If exploration is a pillar of the game - which RAW and statistically speaking, refers to a large majority of all rpg play - you need some place to explore. Geography can be used to emphasize different parts of the...

Is Tolerance a Lawful thing ?

If the definition of tolerance is "a permissive attitude towards opinions/beliefs/ethnicities/practices that differ from one's own" then it probably hinges on whether those differences arise from personal distinctions or societal. For the former, I would consider tolerance a Good trait; for the...

The many types of Sandboxes and Open-World Campaigns

No I have never seen it portrayed as a tool to respond to player input.

The many types of Sandboxes and Open-World Campaigns

Until that post I had never seen it portrayed this way.

The many types of Sandboxes and Open-World Campaigns

The posted specifically mentions it's to allow player agency, but you do you. What interests me is that it allows for not even having a group, and at the same time argues to leave some things in the air for player input.

Over on rpg.net someone recently noted that and I can't stop thinking about the implications.

Five (or so) favorite RPG books for lore/reading pleasure

GURPS WW2 Weird War Two - required reading for any secret history game leading into or out of the war - which is to say, the majority of the 20th Century The Knuckleduster Cowtown Creator - a perfect how-to for a setting. If you didn't want to play a western before you pick this up, you will...

The GM is Not There to Entertain You

The GM is there to run 99% of the world, and ideally that should be done in an entertaining fashion. But she has as much a right to be entertained as well.

The many types of Sandboxes and Open-World Campaigns

The GM shouldn't have to motivate players in a strict West Marches game. The players are supposed to be deciding when to meet and who goes where.
