"in 1st Edition...every DM...assumed that Corellon Larethian put out Gruumsh's eye"?

I would dispute the statement that every DM had that myth as part of the campaign. However, I don't think the error in D&D trivia is a reflection of anything bad on the designer's part. I don't agree with the assumption that some have that the 4th edition designers need to have been playing for...

    Favorite Prestige Class

The shadowdancer was the first prestige class I ever played, and it's probably still my favorite, not counting classes that I wrote up for my setting myself.

    What were your 2e houserules?

Since I played a lot of different campaigns using many different rulebooks in 2nd edition, I can't remember all of the house rules I ended up using. One of the most common ones I used was the elimination of level limits. Humans got a +10% XP bonus instead. I ditched variable weapon damage by...

    D&D Modules on Wikipedia

Wikipedia's greatest strength -- the ability for anyone to read and add their knowledge to it -- is also its greatest weakness as a valid source for citation. Since anyone can edit it and many people do deliberately put in false information, it's not a valid source for an academic paper. It's...

Any interest in an Eberron Adventure Path (1-20)?

I like stealing Eberron adventures for my homebrew, so yeah, I'd be interested.

Dark Sun Novels Back in Print--Starting Sept. 2008

I would love if the books sold well enough to warrant a restart to the Dark Sun setting. If ever a setting needed a reboot or a retcon to make it awesome again, it was Athas.

Dark Sun Novels Back in Print--Starting Sept. 2008

Ah, a stroll down memory lane to revisit the novels that helped ruin the Dark Sun setting...

WHY are elves so danged cool?

If you're an elf, you're a nigh-immortal who is inherently beautiful and graceful, has an innate magical nature, and is a badass with both bows and swords. They cover more ground in their badassery than any of the other races. Dwarves get to be tough. Halflings get to be quick. Elves get to be...

Would you buy FR novels if the game world didn't exist?

    1) Very much the game side. I would prefer it if the big Realms-shaking events occurred in modules rather than stories, too. 2) An old TSR catalog that I had. I was intrigued by the descriptions of the modules and novels alike. The first FR product I purchased, though, was an adventure module...

    Stats for Vecna? (Pre-Godhood?)

I guess it's worth me going into more detail here... My campaign has only one creature that could be considered a true god by D&D standards. The rest are very powerful but mortal creatures that were imprisoned beneath the surface of the world eons ago. Many of these demigods/immortals were...

    Stats for Vecna? (Pre-Godhood?)

I'm planning on unleashing Vecna himself in an upcoming adventure, although he is not a full god in my campaign setting. Was there ever a product or magazine article that detailed Vecna's full stats before he became a god?

D&D 3.x Taking the 4E approach to AOO in 3E

"An attack of opportunity occurs only when a threatened character lets his guard down." That's been my house rule basically since I starte dplaying 3rd edition. On the plus side, it's easy to remember. On the minus side, it leaves things wide open for DM adjudication, which may bother some players.

    D&D 3.x Will 4e last longer than 3e?

Technically, D&D has gone through a lot more than three revisions. There's oD&D, 1st edition, 2nd edition, 3rd edition, 3.5, and now 4th edition. Running parallel to that is the Holmes basic set, the Moldvay/Cook basic and expert set, BECMI, and the Rules Cyclopedia/Wrath of the Immortals combo...

What ever happened to just "playing" the game and telling a great story?

As I got into the game with BECMI D&D, I borrow a lot of my gaming style from that. One of the most important things that edition pushed is that if you don't know a rule, it's better to make something up than stop play and look things up. For 3rd edition, that usually means setting a DC and...

What ever happened to just "playing" the game and telling a great story?

And I remember some huge arguments involving AD&D rules. It's all a matter of perspective and player/DM personalities interacting with the rules. While AD&D might be a better fit for you and your players, I don't think your experience supports the claim that the current edition is too complex or...

What ever happened to just "playing" the game and telling a great story?

I can't say I totally agree with this. In my experience, while players don't enjoy getting long histories on a location, deity, or NPC, they do derive some pleasure from a certain sense of familiarity. They get used to certain aspects of a setting and enjoy returning to the main inn, city, or...

    Warlord archetype in CHAINMAIL

Not being snide or anything here, but wouldn't this discussion be better fit for the 4th edition forum?

    Trials

I don't think I've ever had a PC on trial, although I have had PCs defend or prosecute before. I'm pretty sure that the next time I do any sort of trial, I'm going to model it after the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney video games. I even plan on writing up evidence cards to use for a court record.

    Playing a Ghost PC

Here's another vote for Ghostwalk. In addition to providing a setting where ghosts and humans can interact, it also provides suggestions on incorporating the setting/rules into other campaigns, including Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk if I recall correctly.
