    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

Do you really think I somehow missed that? The question I keep asking is what, specifically, about it is so disturbing? It took over 270 posts to this thread before two posters (@Scribe and @OB1) finally provided answers. And those, frankly, made no sense: one complaint was far past its...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

And? This is the harbinger of the capitalist end-times, a bonus of dubious value for preordering a book?

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

Good thing this isn't happening in D&D. So what is this thread about again?

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

Okay... but D&D has had an official digital component to it since at least the early days of 4e. A complaint about digitalization is 16 years behind the times.

But we're not talking about paying anything extra.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

What, exactly, is this? Multiple posts in this thread have complained about this without once explaining what this precisely is.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

They offer character sheet decorations as incentives because they have so little value. I challenge anyone to find a customer whose only reason to purchase a book from WotC is so they can change the color of frame around their ability scores.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

And so your evidence that WotC is an evil capitalist predator intent on luring us all into a digital prison where they can charge whatever they want for things we can't get anywhere else is... an advertisement in which they're offering physical books for sale? This is what I just don't get. If...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

Agreed! So what I want to know is, what, exactly, is it about the image you posted to start this thread that says WotC is engaged in "an endless chase of growth and profits for profits sake". Other than, you know, selling books as they've always done? I really would like to understand what you...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

It isn't praise to accurately describe a situation. WotC sells books. They've been selling books for decades. Now they also sell books online. It is neither praise nor criticism to say that. If someone wants to claim that this is the start of a slide towards some capitalist hellscape, well...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

If you think extra backdrops and picture frames on a DDB character sheet are driving people's purchasing decisions, I think you're vastly overvaluing those things. And if WotC doesn't want people to buy books, then... why do they sell them, in stores even, where you're free to ignore any future...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

That is NOT what's going on here. As a customer, you have decisions to make. Do I want the digital version of a book, the physical version of a book, or both? Do I want to preorder the book or wait for it to come out? Do I want to preorder all three books, or just one? There are no tiers. There...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Pre-orders; this is sad

What, exactly, is the problem? It makes me feel a little crazy that several people have already posted and seem to agree on the existence of some problem, but no one, including the OP, has clearly expressed what that is.

A Peek at Quests from the Infinite Staircase

Then I guess it's a good thing that stats for any deities aren't provided in 5e.

A Peek at Quests from the Infinite Staircase

Isn't this taking things too far as a general rule, though? I've seen plenty of modern Indian fantasy that references Hindu deities, plenty of Chinese fantasy that references figures still present in modern-day Buddhism, etc. Assuming the involvement of knowledgeable cultural sensitivity...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal: "New Wizard"

Er, the Monstrous Manual, Skills & Powers, Expanded & Revised Dark Sun, Tome of Magic, etc., etc. might have something to say about 2e products that were "nearly all new material".

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #3: "New Paladin"

I literally posted earlier in this thread about how a typical run of Lost Mine of Phandelver resulted in game days with 20-30+ rounds of combat. It's far from "no one".

D&D 5E (2014) Broke a Staff of Power tonight ... it felt EPIC!

When DMing Queen of the Demonweb Pits in the 1e days, the player of the magic-user was facing Lolth alone by the end. He made a valiant effort, but was down to his last hit points, and decided he had nothing to lose by breaking his staff of the magi. BOOM! Killed Lolth (who fortunately only had...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #3: "New Paladin"

As someone who's played D&D for over 40 years, and 5th edition since it was still D&D Next, this sounded odd to me. So I went into my D&D Beyond records for Encounters I've run there, specifically for Lost Mine of Phandalin. When my group raided Cragmaw Castle, there was a total of 21 rounds...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook Reveal #3: "New Paladin"

If you're saving your slots to smite on crits, then you'll only be using your PA/TWF bonus actions... 95% as often as anyone else. Calling them traps seems excessive.
