D&D 5E (2024) It goes to show you can't please everbody!

In an attempt to better understand your position: For comparison, can you provide examples of other "complete" games comprised of one or a small number of first-party publications, that need and perhaps have no third-party support, with scope similar to D&D? (I.e. that allow for creation of a...

D&D 5E (2024) It goes to show you can't please everbody!

So, you're saying the basic D&D product should contain thousands of monsters, all the adventures that could ever be played, and every version of exploration rules that any table might want? That would resolve "huge gaps" you've identified? That would make for a pretty big book; I'd hate to see...

D&D 5E (2024) It goes to show you can't please everbody!

What's a problem for you, however, is just peachy for someone else, and vice versa. Which this thread highlights; WotC literally cannot please everyone on every point. But has WotC produced "a good, functional, complete game" which "works at a basic level"? Millions of D&D players seem to think so.

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Expert Classes Playtest Document Is Live

Except that the scout knows Thieves' Cant for some reason, and is skilled with thieves' tools (not a ton of locks to pick out in the wilds!), and doesn't know how to use a longbow. The smaller hit die isn't great, either. I was really hoping that 1D&D was going to relegate Thieves' Cant and...

Werewolf by Night - spoiler thread

I've been looking around for some discussion about this, but haven't seen any. Other folks noticed Daredevil showing up in the trailer, right? There's a distinctive jump-kick that caught my attention, and if you freeze it just right, a thrown billy club.

    D&D 5E (2024) A strange OD&D Hypothesis

True, but it's a little less of a boost when you consider that crit damage for sneak attack would be removed.

D&D General Al-Qadim, Campaign Guide: Zakhara, and Cultural Sensitivity

But the absence of racism, even fantasy racism, was an element of the original setting. It was one of the interesting points that set Zakhara apart from other settings, even elsewhere in the Forgotten Realms. Quoting from Arabian Adventures (1992): There was also a note that even normally...

D&D 5E (2024) The future of edition changes and revisions

There was a hint of it in 4e; goblins had a notable Feywild presence, so they were already thinking along those lines.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation Post-Mortem (Spoilers)

If it helps, I don't think the goal is necessarily to save their patron from death, or anyone else currently afflicted. It's to allow for the future use of resurrection magic (including for at least some of those who died as a result of the Death Curse). Lots of people dying, most of whom the...

D&D 5E (2014) Full List of Monsters in Mordenkainen Presents Monsters of the Multiverse

You can have your dolphins, I'm excited to have the Yeah Hound back in the game! That brings back fond memories playing 1e... I may have been a valley elf fighter stuck at 5th level, but with my trusty Yeah Hound at my side, backing up everything I said, I felt like 7th level, at least.

    D&D 5E (2014) Unearthed Arcana: Gothic Lineages & New Race/Culture Distinction

Just getting this out of the way: I don't have a problem with dropping things like languages, proficiencies, or cultural features like Stonecunning from D&D racial traits. Those have been nagging annoyances to me for a long time. So let's talk about racial ASIs. Set aside the arguments based on...

    TSR TSR's "Designeritus"

MSH is still my favorite game design of all time. Perfectly suited to its genre, easy to pick up, and a blast to play.

Where was the term THACO first used?

With this thread raised from the dead, I took the opportunity to review my old modules. It turns out the first place I remember seeing THAC0 used by TSR was in DL3 Dragons of Hope (1984).

Weird seeing this with no Forgotten Realms branding.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Gives You Subclasses For Monk, Ranger, and Paladin

This hasn't been mentioned yet, but the oath of redemption is an excellent start to making the equivalent of a 1e shukenja; that seems the clear intent to me. What makes it less than ideal for this purpose is the first two levels, where one is encouraged to play an armored, fully armed warrior...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Introduces The Artifcer

That seems like a good idea. I agree, this would fit better in a dedicated subclass. I think it's clearly designed so that you only have one at a time, but it needs to be spelled out. I agree that it'd be best to hand off a healing draught to someone prior to combat so that you can save...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Introduces The Artifcer

I don't really understand this. Do you think an artificer will be giving away her magic items on a regular basis, when she only gets to make 5 of them over the course of 20 levels? And infuse magic is very limited: the spells only last 8 hours, and the artificer can have no more than 5 (with a...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Introduces The Artifcer

Nice reference! Haven't thought about that in a while. :) Actually, this is what I've always despised about prior artificer implementations. If I can spend an hour making four potions (for example), why can't I spend two hours and make eight? That hurts my sense of verisimilitude. The...
