D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

Hmmmm. I just gave the Class Features UA another look, and I realized it's actually only levels 1 and 2 that you get two spells. That has me wondering if, maybe that'd be good to carry over to this. Hunter's Mark and Zephyr Strike at level 2, Pass Without Trace and Enhance Ability at level 5...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

I do think that's a fair take, but I'd sooner overcorrect than under, if that makes sense. Ranger has eaten their meat, they should get their pudding now.

I think it'd probably be okay? Horizon Walker already gets it, Two Paladin Oaths get it.

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

"We have Haste at home", right? Oh yeah, for sure. Don't have to be limited to any one single solution, though! Can be a few different things helping prop it up!

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

I'm not sure I can concisely explain it beyond "the platonic ideal of a baseline Ranger". Like the opposite of a list of subclass spells, all generalist and no specialist. I think the other spells/potential spells are probably more illustrative; Druidcraft at 1st, Hunter's Mark at 2nd, Pass...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

In part, sure. It's as you said, many concepts are under the umbrella of "Ranger". And I think most, if not all of them, would almost certainly have certain spells such as HM or PWT if mechanical appeal and access were no objects. I don't really want to get into whether or not this notion holds...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

This is true! However, my contention is that; some spells exist, or it could be argued that some spells ought to exist, outside that fact. When was the last time you saw a Ranger that didn't have Hunter's Mark, and that fact wasn't notable in any way? It definitely happens, but it's usually a...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

Oh yeah I definitely agree on both counts, don't get me wrong. After it's made actually good at long last, then we can talk about Ranger getting it for free. And then also their primary class feature being reminiscent of it without being exactly the same. (It's just I've already done both of...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

You forgot Hunter's Mark but included Pass Without Trace! But yes, while I might personally omit some of those, I'm trying to identify those sorts of spells from across the spell lists for 3rd, 4th, and 5th level.

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

You are definitely correct there, but my personal answer to that specific example is giving Ranger a feature that grants the innate ability to communicate with beasts. Revised Rangers' Primeval Awareness basically. But yeah, I'm not necessarily dead-set on the spells granted exclusively being...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

Yeeaah, that's basically the top and bottom of it. That's what has me thinking the answer may be found outside the Ranger spell list. I'm somewhat biased against Guardian of Nature for 4th level because it's flavour is kinda, y'know. Disgusting. It's the same reason I never want to use the...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

I definitely agree, but I think this is a problem for outside the bounds of this thread. For now, we're safe from the storm outside while we're in the house. Those Red lines are more for giving the spells granted by this feature the "broadest applicability", rather specifically for creating a...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

Ahead of you on that front, actually! I didn't mention it above because it's technically a break in the formula, but yeah, 2nd level grants Druidcraft and Hunter's Mark currently. Thinking about it, I guess it should be level 1 like cantrips are for Artificer. Haven't decided if my homebrew...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

I possibly could've explained that point better. What I mean by that point is; certain spells aren't challenging to justify Rangers in those sorts of settings or contexts, casting or at minimum replicating the effects of. In terms of the literal facts of the story, yeah Aragorn only has healing...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Trying to settle on a list of "Core Ranger Spells". Gimme a hand!

I'm still picking away at this Ranger homebrew, and one feature that's been giving me some trouble is an aspect of their Spellcasting I was considering. The premise being; there are certain spells that are both thematically relevant to the Ranger's identity, and are just mechanical main-stays...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

Unironically, probably. The fact that I could take it's premise, make it stronger than they dared to implement, and apply it to a 1st level spell, says a lot.

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

That's actually what I made base Hunter's Mark do, so it doesn't overlap with the main ability that grants an extra damage die. Yeah it's insane that it's a capstone. Even if it were on every attack, but it's not even that, it's once per turn!

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

I definitely like some of these! But... I'm just fundamentally resistant to the idea of Favoured Enemy as a class feature. Cannot be helped, I think.

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

A lot to get into here! These can be tricky, though not impossible of course. It's partially a matter of justifying them being a spell in the first place, I often see people dismissing Snare like "why is it even a spell, you could just set up a physical snare". Could work! I think Zephyr...
