D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

But they do get some nice things, primo access to maneuvers being one of them. It's just that there are some definite winners and losers as far as builds go. Either mechanically, or flavourfully. Or both. I actually think a better analogy would be Metamagic. There has always been a desire for...

Also, like. This particularly stings because, the reverse isn't true. Rangers don't get Heavy armour proficiency, there actually is something that stops you from playing a Green Knight Ranger out the gate.

Thanks, sure, that'd be potentially helpful! I'll also maybe show what I've got for Ranger in general. I have limited options as far as second opinions go, so.

Your line of thinking would be more warranted if Paladins only got Heavy armour proficiency, but they don't even just get Heavy and Medium, they get all three, plus shields. I'm not really seeing the straightjacket beyond the implicit theme they shoot for at a baseline, which you are not...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

I don't mind the idea of Hunter's Mark, rather than having straightforward scaling, having some optional buffs you can pick from when you cast it. I don't even mind it for this idea, potentially. But yeah only when it's granted for free. I dislike Hunter's Mark being rendered the Ranger's...

I strongly wish Iron Mind from Gloomstalker was a base Ranger feature. More than that I wish I could've worked it in as a base Ranger feature on my homebrew levelling table!

That is very similar to how I'm imagining it (besides them being spells and I think at least some of them being multi-target could make sense/be good), it's just. Ironing out the details is tricky. I haven't fully decided yet, if they're not granted specifically by a feature on the levelling...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

That is certainly a reason, but it's also just the historical association they have. They are correlated to "Holy Knights". I'm not saying these are absolute, unshakable facts of both classes, those are just their leanings and the mechanics have keyed off of those leanings.

They're half-caster spins on a full caster that particularly back up martial prowess with magical power, and their core theme can be characterized as an off-shoot of that of the full caster they're related to. Artificer is a late addition to this, they form a trinity in these ways. Maybe some...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

I don't know that that's accurate? 3 would almost certainly still apply, 4 you say yourself that 5E is more lenient about it already, 5 I'm still stewing on it, 6 is more just, I echo the sentiment of "it can be frustrating to be expected to adhere rigidly to the idea of verbal or somatic...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

Paladin and Ranger are peer classes, they mirror or parallel eachother in several ways. But Paladin has always been the favourite of the two. It has legitimacy Ranger sorely lacks. I see the Smite spells as an extension of that legitimacy, everyone knows Smite is good and it's desirable to do it...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

I mean! I don't know that that's how I'd describe what I'm doing here necessarily! I'd be happy if those that dislike spellcasting on Ranger find the mechanics offered translucent enough that the flavour they prefer can be enforced, but. Y'know. Is this idea necessarily a huge departure from how...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

That is what they're theoretically set up as by WOTC, but I don't really think it works, thematically or mechanically. Mechanically, if you're playing a character that only cares about killing one guy... Well you should play a Paladin and Smite them. Beyond that, I dunno! I feel like Ranger has...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

Yeah, I mean. I don't think it's even desirable for these spells to be useful in every single session or combat. From a flavour standpoint at least. Like, the idea for me is that, knowing which would be helpful is your reward for playing up to your class identity over the course of adventuring...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

These are gettable things (though likely never from WOTC)! In particular, free spells known are a part of my homebrewing. It's a similar premise to those who say "Warlocks should just get Eldritch Blast for free and not have it count against their cantrips", I've been messing with a list of the...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

There's definitely some merit to that of course, though that might then limit your ability to affect multiple creatures. If you're fighting 3 Trolls (y'know, like in that one funny book), you ideally want to cut off all their regeneration if you're the guy with the spell specifically for that...

D&D 5E (2014) [+] Rangers should have monster fighting spells equivalent to Paladin's Smite spells. Discuss!

I like the ideas here! Though I do think we're maybe a bit too tied to Smite's framework with our conceptualization of this roster of spells. I get the appeal/logic there, but. I wonder if rendering it closer to... Somewhere between Hunter's Mark and Bane, would be better.

I find the pre-existing solutions lacking. For one thing, both of those use concentration!

There are favourable examples, though. There's a single Troll that doesn't have the Regeneration trait, and that's it's gimmick. Though, yeah, these are only really serving as the jumping off point.
