Ongoing damage and saves in a surprise round?

So everyone roles initiative before the surprise round. Then every unsurprised creature takes an action. Specifically the PHB says "(Surprised combatants take no actions during the surprise round)" It doesn't say that surprised people do not take ongoing damage or roll for saves. They take no...

    Cooking: Simple ramen noodle recipes

At home I cook the ramen seperate. At work I would just chuck it in and cook it until the ramen is done.

    Area push

I think Dinkeldog was addressing the fact that "its a houserule" is discouraged on this board. I responded because I thought Robsenworld provided enough supporting information in his post that it wasn't just one of those "it's a houserule" conversation stoppers but instead explained not just...

    Area push

I think what Robsenworld went on to say is that since the tactical advantage of push is generally that it moves enemies away the RAI is most likely to have the push adjudicaled according to the rules of forced movement. Otherwise the caster is likely to be pulling some of his enemies toward him...

    Diseases trivial?

So people are being too literal in order to have the pleasure of correcting others. Thanks for clarifying.

    Cooking: Simple ramen noodle recipes

Add one package of Ramen without the flavoring package to one can of Campbells soup that was one sale. Vegetarian Vegetable is the best I think. Avoid soups that already have noodles or rice. You get the filling quality of the ramen and the nutrition of the soup at less than $2 per meail.

    Signing up for The Draft

I have never really talked to anyone in the post-Vietnam era who considered registering for the Selective Service as any more or less impacting than renewing a vehicle registration or some other tedious government mandated responsibility. I personally don't remember registering. I do, however...

    Diseases trivial?

Maybe I was unclear, or maybe some people are being a bit literal in order to offer corrections, but I meant "I could not take 10 because I am not trained in calculus and would have no chance of making the check unless I rolled a 20."

    Diseases trivial?

I suspect your intelligence score is much higher than mine. If you gave me a calculus problem and an evening to work it I may or may not get it right. I couldn't take 10, that it for sure. Likewise, if I was a cleric trained in Healing and you had a set of symptoms I may or may not be able to...

    Defeating my powergamer Glave master

But just because other people in the thread are arguing it doesn't mean it is unclear either. The plain text reading seems pretty clear to me. Maybe everyone should take a timeout and re-read the PHB.

    Diseases trivial?

Giving herbs is mundane. Knowing which herbs to give for a disease you probably have not seen before is not mundane. I am not sure why you are equating the amount of calories one must expand with how mundane the activity is. Digging a grave is hard but mundane. Calculus can be done in bed but is...

Need opinions on a Fighter level 2 Utility...

It depends on how much the DM uses terrain and monster roles and how he or she uses them. We are often in situtations where my Warlond and the fighter are trying to use tactical movement to get around the soldier-types to put heat on the leader/controller/boss early. Pass Forward, Opening Shove...

    Shifter powers, annoying pre-req?

Not annoying at all. Aside from the balance issues addressed above it is kind of the flavor of the race, right? If you were to just give a static bonus or something it might work but wouldn't capture the "drop the tire iron" aspect of the shifter. You hurt them; they get angry. That is the...

Coup de Grace questions (multiple attacks)

For 1 and 3 most DMs would (or probably should) prefer to handle these as narrative, role-playing or skills oriented situations so the coup de grace wouldn't be a factor. Number 2 starts a cascade of "common sense" calls that are usually counter-productive from a game standpoint. A small...

    So, about Expertise...

I agree with you. I will be giving everyone the expertise feat of their choice for free since a feat everyone will take means effectively a loss of a feat.

    So, about Expertise...

It isn't like they are recalling your Ford Escort for failing brakes! It is a game made by real human being. 100% perfection is an unreasonable expectation even in things that actually matter like medicine, food safety and car brakes. In a role playing game rule-set you just have to go with it...

    Help keeping my players alive

Much better to change the plot than to introude magic items. Is the plot absolutely time sensitive, meaning a ticking time bomb? You may need to explain the details more but how about a hidden chapel that restores HP and surges with a skill challenge? A slave/orphan/scholar that shows up and...

    Magic Item Wish List????

I don't know. It seems to me that of all editions, magic items represent the smallest portion of the character's overall power in 4e. 3e was a little over the top but even in 1e the ability score bonuses were less and Vorprol Swords and Staves of the Magi were a big deal. Basically, this is...

Item Creation Rituals - several points

Reminds me of trying to navigate the item creation "rules" as they were in 1st and 2nd edition. In my experience it will devolve into wasted time butchering everything, with clever characters trying to think of uses for every bit of the monster they could think of. It is much less fun and much...
