    D&D 5E (2024) What should the 15th Class be?

With Warlord and Psion, they would finally fulfill what they initially… I’ll say “advertised” as opposed to “promised”… that they would include every class that had appeared in a previous PHB1, in some form.

The Mighty Nein Animated Series to Debut on Prime Video on November 19th

For whatever it’s worth, my two cents on the matter is: And I’ll say again that in the long term, it was hugely impactful on the overarching story. Any finger-pointing about whose fault it was, if any, falls ultimately flat in the face of that being a defining moment of the campaign. The goal...

    D&D General Games Economies

Eve’s economy is also greatly helped by the fact that its in-game currency can be used to buy subscription time. That gives its currency a real-life value that is easily quantifiable, making participation in its economy much more appealing to players. There’s no way to actually convert in-game...

The Mighty Nein Animated Series to Debut on Prime Video on November 19th

I get people feeling that way when it first happened, but in the long term it became such a significant thing for the overarching plot of the campaign…

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

I gotta disagree about little story momentum. The momentum here is coming from the mystery. The stark contrast from the confidence Thijazi had that he would be rescued juxtaposed against his panic when it didn’t work out, meeting all these characters who knew him and are all equally eager to...

Critical Role Critical Role Season 4 DM says encounters will not be balanced.

I mean, I wouldn’t go from gods to wolves. More like goblins to hobgoblins (to orcs to trolls to giants, etc, etc…) But, fundamentally, yes. A lot of games are designed that way, MMOs included, because it’s a highly engaging play pattern.

Critical Role Critical Role Season 4 DM says encounters will not be balanced.

Ideally, you want that tension sine wave. Peaks of high difficulty, valleys of low difficulty, and periods of rising/falling difficulty between. If I had my druthers, this would be built into the encounter building rules. “Recommended” encounters would be easier at some levels, harder at some...

Critical Role Critical Role Season 4 DM says encounters will not be balanced.

I think the crossover of that subfaction and critical role fans is limited

    D&D General Perception vs Investigation

I fundamentally agree that it’s best not to have multiple successful rolls required for a single task. I just consider “find the trap,” “figure out how the trap works” and “disable the trap” to all be separate tasks. It’s also worth noting that none of these tasks actually require a successful...

    D&D General Perception vs Investigation

Oh, ok, sorry for the misunderstanding. I do see what you mean, Investigation checks do get called for a lot less often than Perception checks at my table as well. One thing that they do get used for though is dealing with traps, secret doors, and other such mechanisms. Any time a player studies...

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

I mean, I don’t think “predetermined story” is quite the right way to describe it, but I would expect the overture to be much more carefully curated and event-driven than a campaign that is allegedly in the style of Westmarches, which tends to be extremely nonlinear and location-based. And from...

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

I would expect the four-episode overture to be much more carefully crafted, because that’s the point - it’s supposed to be an introduction to the new setting, its central themes, and the large cast of new characters, and of course to hook people in. If you’re more interested in the emergent...

    D&D General Perception vs Investigation

Makes sense. One thing I notice is that your phrasing, “People never use Investigation to try to puzzle out info about things they are looking at in my games” seems to imply that it’s primarily your players who are initiating checks. In that context, it makes sense that you would want to give...

Critical Role's Campaign 4 Opens With a Funeral and Plenty of Intrigue

I thought it was extremely fun, but I get what you mean. There were some more lighthearted moments, particularly when Sam and Whitney were on camera. But, from Brennan’s pitch of the setting, I would expect the main themes to be heavy stuff.

I think the ads always feel that way

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode One +

Totally understandable! To be clear, I did absolutely intend “no combat in this episode” as a negative. Combat being a bit less interesting to watch (for me) was just to say that personally I found it a relatively small negative.

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode One +

I loved it! Emotionally intense, plenty of intrigue. No combat this episode, but I do feel like combat tends to be the least interesting part of most Actual Plays anyway. There is a lot of lore coming at you pretty fast, but personally I didn’t think it was too much to follow. I’d say give it a...

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode One +

I’m sure that was just a “you’re four inches tall, your strength should be as low as it can possibly be” thing (or alternatively, I’m four inches tall, my strength should be as low as it can possibly be)

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode One +

Oh, interesting! The characters’ spreads all seem above expectations for that method. I wonder if they had any “reroll if total is less than X” type insurance policy at play and just didn’t mention it.
