Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode 4 is a High-Octane Rollercoaster

This is another good point! In fact, after campaign 1, the idea that these games have been DMed by a single person has always been an illusion. Brennan specifically pointed it out in an interview prior to this campaign being released, he said something along the lines of “what you see as me...

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode 4 is a High-Octane Rollercoaster

No worries! It’s not like there’s a rule against reiterating things that have already been mentioned. A lot of threads would be a lot shorter if there was!

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode 4 is a High-Octane Rollercoaster

I wouldn’t say Taliesin’s characters have required mountains of homework. Percy probably did, but as you observed, he started playing Percy as an off-the-rack character for a different system. The blood hunter and the gravity barbarian were both things Matt had written separately, and Taliesin...

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode 4 is a High-Octane Rollercoaster

Been mentioned a couple times now in the thread, but yeah, bears repeating. The concept is very specifically tied to D&D.

I definitely wouldn’t characterize Taliesin as a spotlight hog. He has played a homebrew character in all of the campaigns, but he’s far from the only one to do so, and I’m pretty sure every PC in this campaign has homebrew elements. What Taliesin is, is goth. And I know a lot of DMs have a...

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode 4 is a High-Octane Rollercoaster

I’m glad the original Lake Geneva group didn’t share your disdain for characters being “special,” or we’d never have gotten the cleric, the thief, or the ranger. Homebrewing new options to allow the players to realize their unique character concepts is a tradition as old as the hobby itself.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure about him prior to episode 4, but that one won me over.

I don’t see any reason it can’t work in D&D. He said in the cooldown that he got the idea from Granted, you need to do some homebrewing to handle how that works mechanically. But, I don’t see any problem with that. Homebrew is the beating heart of the hobby.

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode 4 is a High-Octane Rollercoaster

Yeah, Matt’s character so far has been such a red flag to me… he’s like a walking example of how not to make a character for a collaborative game. I’m hoping it goes somewhere worthwhile. Luis’ character… I quite like him, and I’m not really sure why? He’s exactly the sort of generic hero dude...

2024 D&D Core Rulebooks Off to "Strongest-Ever" Start for D&D Books

No, in terms of initial sales. Initial sales is what this earnings report concerns, and what I meant has gotten better with each new edition.

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode 4 is a High-Octane Rollercoaster

I guess, but like… isn’t the lack of content in modern streaming series generally considered a negative? I dunno, maybe I’m an old woman yelling at clouds, but I liked it when shows used to go for dozens of seasons that were scores of episodes long. I get that. And I do empathize with those of...

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode 4 is a High-Octane Rollercoaster

Eh, nobody is bothered by, like, House of the Dragon being a railroad. At the end of the day, Critical Role is a show. If it’s entertaining to watch, I’m not worried about how much agency the actors have. I remember when it was a hot button discussion topic to speculate on if Critical Role is...

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode 4 is a High-Octane Rollercoaster

That can happen when you have multiple players wanting to be the broody, stoic badass with a secret heart of gold. I do hope that if they are at the same table, they don’t make a habit of getting into Big Damn Hero contests.

Critical Role Critical Role Campaign 4 Episode 4 is a High-Octane Rollercoaster

Oh, it absolutely was set up to produce a specific story outcome. Some may find that distasteful - I certainly would, in the context of a home game. In a show that’s effectively a semi-improvised audio drama, I’m alright with it. Especially because it is still part of the overture. But, yeah, I...

D&D General The Beautiful Mess of 5e

I think one flat mod coming from ability score is fine. The nice thing about flat mods is that they help counteract the swinginess of the d20. Proficiency dice do bring more swing into action resolution, as instead of, say, a 6-25 range for a proficient check with your primary ability at 1st...

D&D General The Beautiful Mess of 5e

I think, unfortunately, the only way you’ll be able to get that is to make a call about what source(s) are available to use, and just say, that’s what we’re using. Save your ideas about characters using material from another sourcebook for another campaign, for this one we’re sticking to just...

D&D General Hours actually playing RPGs, D&D?

Hard to say, because the game I’m currently playing in is extremely inconsistent in both frequency of sessions and length of sessions. But it’s a smaller number than most years, because the DM for our current campaign, a very good friend whom I love to death, is frankly both lazy about prep and...

D&D General The Beautiful Mess of 5e

I make no claims to it being simpler. It just makes how the proficiency mechanic works more obvious, which I consider a significant benefit. Also, while 1d20+7 is obviously simpler than 1d20+2d4+3, the +7 is only written down for the bog-standard ability/skill combinations. I’m a DM who makes...
