Tell me that D&D 3.0/3.5 isn't really like this

I too have found this to be a common barrier to entry for new players, especially in my age group (30+). People with full-time jobs often find 3e to be too time-consuming to learn (even people who played an earlier version of D&D years ago).

Tell me that D&D 3.0/3.5 isn't really like this

Point of clarification: the rules 'are there' in both C&C and True20. Those games are both internally logical and complete. Their mechanics are just more general and abstract -- and thus simpler. The fact that you prefer a more detailed game like 3e does not mean that 'lighter' alternatives...

Tell me that D&D 3.0/3.5 isn't really like this

There are aspects of 3e that definitely encourage this kind of behaviour (viz. consulting a book for the relevant rule in the middle of the game), simply because the game is so detailed and comprehensive, but how far it is carried depends on the participants. Systems that are 'rules lighter'...

Wealth by Level Guidelines- how closely do you follow them?

I didn't use the XP chart in either of my 3e campaigns. I prefer a slower, more story-based, approach. It worked fine, since my players were more focused on the plot than loot and powers.

Wealth by Level Guidelines- how closely do you follow them?

If your players are having a good time, how could you possibly be 'short changing' them? Any rule or guideline in a RPG should be changed if it results in a fun campaign.

Wealth by Level Guidelines- how closely do you follow them?

I can't imagine ever using them for any campaign that I would like to run. And I would have nothing to do with players who tried to tell me that I 'should' follow those guidelines -- I have no time for petty, immature people like that.

    The Egg of WHAT?

Gregg Scott was that wargamer. The name 'Egg of Coot' is a play on his name.

Kickin' it old school -- are you game?

    Too true.

Kickin' it old school -- are you game?

    Nice arrangement. I'm envious. :)

Kickin' it old school -- are you game?

I'd be happy to play/run a Rules Cyclopedia D&D campaign anytime, anywhere. For now, though, I'm happy using my old D&D and 1e AD&D suff with the Castles and Crusades game, which is pretty 'old school' in feel (but which does not suffer from most of the problems mentioned by JoeGKushner)...

Best D20/OGL Setting I SHOULD Own

Castles and Crusades isn't a setting -- it is a separate OGL game. So is Conan, of course, but since Conan also includes a setting -- Hyboria -- it kinda makes sense to include it in the poll. (Same goes for Blue Rose, Lone Wolf, Slaine, and a few others.) But C&C? Not really. (I love the...

Dungeons & Dragons Lite: Am I the Only One?

I don't consider even using only the core books 'D&D lite'. You're probably playing the game the way that 70+ percent of people who play 3e play the game. And standard 3e is not a 'lite' game. I consider using the RC (or playing C&C) 'D&D lite'.

    Charles Ryan on Adventures

To answer your question: the same can be said about Conan. (You will not be able use the CR system anymore, but you can definitely still use the MM. Of course, 'monsters' are much rarer in Conan.) Similarly, you can use the MM with C&C. And probably most other fantasy OGL games. It might be...

    Charles Ryan on Adventures

Well, to be fair, I suspect that Mike Mearls would consider IH akin to AU/AE -- an alternative PHB that can be used on its own, or 'plundered' for ideas for a 3e D&D game. (However, if this is true of IH, I don't see why it's not also true for fantasy OGL games like Conan or even C&C.)

Are Fantasy RPGs always D&D spin-off's?

Of course not. Buffy and Angel are both 'fantasy', but clearly not D&D-ish in nature. Ars Magica is not a D&D 'spin off'. Neither is Pendragon. And so forth.

RPGs you own but have never played

Conan d20. (I want to play it ... I do!) True 20. (On my computer, looking cute.) Angel. (Oh well, at least I managed to get a few sessions of Buffy going.)

Actually, it's a surprise that so many d20 publishers are still around, despite initially publishing bunches of adventures. (If you want 3rd party publishers to do what you want, give them money to do so.)

    What do you usually play?

Lately, C&C, though I'll be a player in a 3.5 campaign soon. (As a GM, I prefer C&C, but would like to give True 20 a go at some point.)

The Golden Age of D&D and its Art...

I'll take Trampier and Otus over any current artist. The Trampier cover for 1e PHB, as well as his illustration 'Emirikol the Chaotic' in 1e DMG, sum up D&D to me. Nobody depicts the Cthulhu mythos better than Otus. Nobody. And his covers for the Moldvay Basic set and Cook Expert...
