D&D General The Beautiful Mess of 5e

While it's kind of a neat idea, the problem I have with the proficiency a PC may have with a skill being represented by a die is that trained skill is treated as a swingy part of the result rather than providing reliable stability. In fact, no matter how proficient a master might get (from +1d4...

Science Fiction: Greatest TV Shows Part III

The Expanse's exclusion wasn't arbitrary - it simply failed the complete rule because there were shows that hadn't aired yet at the time of his post. The series, as filmed and shown on TV, wasn't complete - we were anticipating more that would have a bearing on our judgment of the series as a...

D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

I'm not entirely sure I'd ever say that the game was deliberately exclusionary - as in intending to exclude people based on characteristics they can't control. As an example: While sexism is evident in some of Gygax's commentaries outside the game and it has some notoriously sexist elements...

D&D General The Beautiful Mess of 5e

Moreover, if upcasting was an optimal strategy for D&D damage spells, then why have the upper level damage spells at all? Just introduce spells like "energy rays", "energy ball", "energy cone" and make them fully generic in damage and/or damage type and just set those variables based on the...

D&D General Why Enworld should liberate D&D from Hasbro

The 1.6 million is just the BookScan-handled sales. And Ben Riggs clearly points out that's merely a floor for what 5e sales would be considering only about 50% of his own book sales are captured by BookScan.

Your top 5 movie trilogies of all time, and why?

I was recently reminded of the Cornetto trilogy: Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End. It's less of an interconnected story trilogy as much as a set of movies made by the same people and senses of humor.

The Many Faces of Roleplaying: How ‘RPG’ Became Everything and Nothing

I'm not surprised people feel strongly about it. It's an issue that breeds divisiveness because you're (effectively) telling them whether what they're doing is in Bin A or Bin B based on some criteria that they might agree with. I had to put up with that crap from coaches of other sports in high...

The Many Faces of Roleplaying: How ‘RPG’ Became Everything and Nothing

They're sportspeople, jocks, athletes, or whatever because both of those games are sports/athletics. Just as we'd call Traveller players, D&D players, Masks players, and Warhammer Fantasy Role Playing players RPGers.

D&D General Gameholecon Wardens OP allows PCs from variant 5e D&D systems

That's pretty much what we'll have to deal with in Wardens. And I think it's OK for the general table to be run as 5e.2024 and have the players adjust themselves to that expectation if there's a difference. I told my players that the references I bring are 5e.2024 focused and those will be the...

The Many Faces of Roleplaying: How ‘RPG’ Became Everything and Nothing

Inhabiting a personality, but not necessarily a role. An individual doesn't need to have a distinct personality to be playing a role that has different interests and priorities than another role. And those could be expressed mechanically. So? Why exactly is this a bad thing - other than the...

The Many Faces of Roleplaying: How ‘RPG’ Became Everything and Nothing

I don't know that I see much value in trying to narrow the lane of what constitutes "role playing" with respect to playing these games. Whether procedural or interpretive character growth, or working with different play styles and expectations, the fact that a player is taking on an individual...

D&D General Gameholecon Wardens OP allows PCs from variant 5e D&D systems

I ran the games as 5e.2024 as the scenarios were written and expected the players with non-D&D PCs to adjust. The Wardens, as organized play, expects the players to know how to play their characters. And nothing weird ever came up to the point I wanted to ask for a reference to review.

D&D General Gameholecon Wardens OP allows PCs from variant 5e D&D systems

I think in the 4 sessions I ran of Wardens, I mainly had only one non-D&D character present per session (I believe one of the sessions had two). But I DID have a non-D&D variant in every session.

Except most of the house rules make the game worse, not better. Monopoly is actually better without most common house rules than with them.

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts on bonus action potions?

Maybe you should look up potions in the DMG. There, it says: That's just as specific as the 1/2 pound weight of the potion of healing in the equipment list. Moreover, what's the smallest weight of anything in the adventuring equipment list? Yeah, it's 1/2 lb. So they basically don't want to...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

You mean, like, through role playing quirky adventurers? I mean they could husband all of their resources for combat situations, but that wouldn't be the kind of RPG they want to play - or that we'd want to watch, frankly.
