D&D 5E (2014) Hp as meat and abstraction

I'm still trying to figure out why the D&D Next subforum seems to be the 'Tell the world why you hate 4e' forum.

D&D 5E (2014) 30 speed for all! Halflings, Gnomes, Dwarves were feeling left behind?

From a verisimilitude perspective, why should my 18 Dex halfling rogue be slower than the goblin he's chasing down? I'd really like to hear an example of a 'big effect' this change would have on somebody's game.

D&D 5E (2014) 30 speed for all! Halflings, Gnomes, Dwarves were feeling left behind?

It's just you. A 5 foot increase in speed for two races has a miniscule effect on gridded games. Zero effect on gridless ones. An insult to the history of the game? Yeah, you're the only one. Yes, we are all just outraged by this. Wizards is doing it just to torment you.

D&D 5E (2014) Hp as meat and abstraction

Correct, I remember now. My problem with healing in 4e wasn't as much the realism or lack thereof, its that there was so much of it. A character with 80 hit points, 16 healing surges, 8 ways to trigger surges, isn't dying - ever. And I had a party with a Warlord and a Cleric *shudder*

D&D 5E (2014) Hp as meat and abstraction

Since the description of Hit Dice says it requires an hour (a short rest) resting and involves first aid, I really don't see how it's similar at all. Second Wind is temporary HP, closer I suppose, but still believable as 'tapping into reserves of stamina.' That said, I certainly do not want to...

D&D 5E (2014) Hp as meat and abstraction

"Your axe glances off the dragon's thick hide, scratching it slightly but not doing much real damage." When a PC misses an armored opponent do you ever say the strike was deflected by opponents shield? Or is every miss swinging through open sky like a strike in baseball? I really don't see the...

Incidentally, does martial 'warlord style' healing even exist in D&D Next? After all, one optional mechanic, of one build, of one class has 'Damage on a Miss', and it's triggered 'Open Letters To Mike Mearls' and some of the most laughable histrionics I've ever seen.

D&D 5E (2014) Hp as meat and abstraction

While currently I lean towards the opinion that 'Damage on a Miss' does indeed detract from the simulation, I am mostly ambivalent to it. It's such a minor, class-specific mechanic I could ignore with minimal effort, I really don't consider it a dealbreaker. However they hysterics it triggers...

D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Tiers of Play

I prefer my PCs to fight giant rats as long as possible. When Dire Rats cease to become a threat the campaign has jumped the shark. I'm only half joking. I recall my 3rd edition campaign hitting 12th level and feeling like "Sorry lads, there's nobody left to fight."

Right. So while damage on a miss and yelling wounds closed fills you with righteous simulationist indignation, your high-level character bathing in lava and needing 100 'light scratches' from a greataxe before suddenly fainting is the epitome of realism.

A character still taking half damage when he successfully dodges a lightning bolt must fill you with tortuous cognitive dissonance.

D&D 4E What can Next do to pull in 4e campaigns?

I'm confident in the generalization that 3e and 4e become cumbersome and tedious as the party grows in level, and I think eventually that sucks the spark out of playing. I dove head-first into both editions when they arrived. At the beginning, low and early mid-levels, both editions were a...

D&D 4E What can Next do to pull in 4e campaigns?

I'm betting there are a lot of dissatisfied 4e players, just as there is a lot dissatisfied 3e/PF players. It seems the more you play either edition, the less you like it - especially if you're the DM. I think D&D Next has a good chance of converting the 'dissenters'.

D&D 4E What can Next do to pull in 4e campaigns?

Levels still give you plenty of stuff - like class abilities, extra attacks and hit points - they just don't give you (much) of a bonus to your attack roll. If you've ever suffered the torture of a high-level 3e/4e game, you'll like Bounded Accuracy I think.

D&D 4E What can Next do to pull in 4e campaigns?

I've never played those games. My experience is limited to the various editions of D&D. I will say that those three things, in my opinion, provide a vastly better tabletop experience than that of 4th edition and 3rd Edition and its variants. If you'd like to discuss D&D Next compared to the...

D&D 4E What can Next do to pull in 4e campaigns?

Mistwell's link I'm sure gives a good description, here's my take: Bounded accuracy is a design directive of D&D Next that purposely curbs the attack progression of characters and NPCs. There is a slight progression called 'Proficiency Bonus' that is level-based, but it's greatly slowed down...

D&D 4E What can Next do to pull in 4e campaigns?

Hobo- I'm glad you found my commentary useful. I've taken to calling what I like best about D&D Next its "Hat Trick", three design philosophies that inject a breath of fresh air into the tabletop experience. Things I have missed sorely for 2 editions. Those things are: 1. Speed of Play 2...

D&D 5E (2014) Ack! Starting Next tonight - anything I should know last minute? (Edit: first impressions)

My friend, you just summed up the D&D Next "hat trick" that makes it my favorite edition by a mile: The D&D Next Hat Trick 1. Speed of Play 2. Bounded Accuracy 3. Theater of the Mind

D&D 5E (2014) Ack! Starting Next tonight - anything I should know last minute? (Edit: first impressions)

    - Monsters in the Bestiary die very quickly. - 'Boss' monsters without help die even faster. - A DC10 saving throw is not easy to make. - Don't forget about hit dice/short rests (which require an hour)

D&D 5E (2014) How important is party balance in Next? (iow, how necessary are clerics?)

I agree. I've always encouraged players to play whatever they wanted within the theme of the campaign. It is indeed bad DMing to shoehorn a cleric into the party 'or else'. Yet, I dont believe the role of the Cleric is overly inflated in D&D Next. If I were to place the D&D Next cleric within...
