    D&D 5E (2014) Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

Two minor mechanics (one class-specific) easily excised from the game. These these are your dealbreaking 'horrible 4e mechanics' that got ported into Next?

    D&D 5E (2014) Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

Another anecdote: My 10-year-old son wants to start gaming in earnest with dad and his friends (we are playing the D&D Next playtest rules currently). I told him to wait till summer when D&DN comes out 'for real', so he can read about the races and classes and finally make his own character...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

Shouldn't this thread be titled: Why I don't like WotC and hope DDN fails.

D&D 5E (2014) Playing the Game vs. Reading the Rules of the Game

Played DDN(5e) several times and have decided it's the edition for me. Beyond anything else the pace of play is refreshingly brisk. We just get so much more done in a session than the past two editions. It has delivered what I was looking for and I'll be sticking with it.

D&D 5E (2014) Final playtest packet due in mid September.

Fine by me. Right now the game contained in the stack of photocopied Next playtest PDFs sitting in my binder is already leagues better than my 3rd and 4th edition books sitting on the shelf next to them. I do hope to see rough edges polished, and irritating burrs ground off, but D&D Next is...

D&D 5E (2014) Can D&D Next Unite Fans of Different Editions? I think there is some hope now.

This is not my experience. I was a 3e, then a 4e, then a Pathfinder DM. 10 years of 3rd edition had burnt me out, so I hopped to 4th. Eventually my 4th edition 'fatigue' reached critical mass and I jumped over to Pathfinder. As my Pathfinder party grew in level (only to about level 8), the 3rd...

D&D 5E (2014) Can D&D Next Unite Fans of Different Editions? I think there is some hope now.

For what it's worth, my group is a spilt group of 2e, 3e and Pathfinder fans, and D&D Next has already united us. Everyone is having a great time breathing the 'fresh air' of a system that's free of the exhausting complexity of past editions.

D&D 5E (2014) 02/08/13 New playtest packet to released today. [Udate: PACKAGE OUT!][

Actually, I think you're absolutely right - the Next fighter is such an imposing threat he must be dealt with first. The enemy must put him down at all costs, then deal with the rest of the party. If this was a design goal, it's working. My first thought wasn't about powerful NPC spellcasters...

I don't remember the exact math behind advantage, but I read on this board that it was roughly equal to a +4 bonus? +4 to all saves seems powerful to me.

'Indomitable is awesome! I love the new invincible fighter!' Okay, but realize the effects of this ripple across the whole game. A character with high AC, lots of hit points, and strong defenses against magic and everything else, is a very unattractive target for the DM. Without 4e-style tricks...

    D&D 5E (2014) We need more Int/Str/Cha saving throws

I tend to agree. The split between Wisdom and Charisma saves would be a nuanced, inexact science, but I'd like to see... Wisdom Saves resist: fear, hold, confusion, slow Charisma Saves resist: charm, dominate, suggestion, command So Charisma is the ability that resists 'mental control and...

I don't either, but as a stand-alone ability, irrespective of anything else, I was sure I was looking at a typo when I read Indomitable - it is that good. Even if you forget about balance, why should the Fighter be inherently better than all others at resisting everything? I think entrenched...

D&D 5E (2014) The Barbarian has been Nerfed YET AGAIN. Where is Thick Hide?

I was disappointed to see Thick Hide get removed. The shirtless Conan-style barbarian should be supported, at least as an option. I think a feat is needed at least. I also agree that they seem to be getting a little carried away heaping double scoops of 'awesome' onto the fighter.

I don't remember the older editions well enough to make comparisons, but in 3rd Fighters had good Fort Saves, and that was it. As far as I can tell, the D&D Next Fighter has the best (or among the best): hit points, armor, durability, attack bonus and melee damage. Adding in advantage to all...

D&D 5E (2014) 02/08/13 New playtest packet to released today. [Udate: PACKAGE OUT!][

If you want to look to past editions, a fighter was particularly good at resisting attacks on Fortitude (Con saves) only, and not as good at dodging (Reflex/Dex) and resisting mental attacks (Will/Wis). I dont remember what the 2nd Ed. Fighter's saves looked like, but I expect he was good at...

D&D 5E (2014) 02/08/13 New playtest packet to released today. [Udate: PACKAGE OUT!][

As a point of reference, there is a Level 9 Rogue (previous playtest) in my group. This rogue has Uncanny Dodge, Evasion, and a 20 Dex. The combination makes him virtually immune to anything requiring a Dexterity save. Every damaging spell misses. Every breath weapon misses. Every trap. Now...

This just cherry-picks the most difficult save possible to justify the feature. Rather than comparing the worst save against the best attack you can come up with, you'd be better off looking at all the monsters in the Bestiary a level 13+ Fighter might face. What are the implications of having...

    D&D 5E (2014) We need more Int/Str/Cha saving throws

Just chiming in to say I agree with you 100%. Stormonu's list remains the best way to do it: Strength Saves - resist - physical force -example: Gust of Wind Dexterity Saves - resist - things that can be dodged -example: Fireball Constitution Saves - resist...

Legacy justifications aside, it is just way too good, and seems a ham-fisted way of representing this idea. Shrugging off certain effects like poison or mental compulsions is fine, but this is overkill. Also, I always felt the monk was supposed the guy who was good at 'resisting everything'.

    D&D 5E (2014) 8/5/2013 Playtest: Classes

FIGHTER: Really trying to make heads or tails of the power Indomitable (L13, advantage on all saves). Seems waaay too powerful.
