D&D 5E (2014) 02/08/13 New playtest packet to released today. [Udate: PACKAGE OUT!][

Indomitable (Level 13 Fighter Ability) - advantage on all saving throws. Are you kidding me? The Fighter becomes nearly impervious to magic (and everything else) roughly midway through his career? Anyone care to explain how this is anything but boring and broken?

    D&D 5E (2014) Two things I like about D&DNext

    1) Bounded Accuracy - solves a thousand headaches with one simple brilliant design methodology 2) Saves for Each Ability Score - really, really hoping Charisma, Intelligence and Strength Saves show up eventually.

    D&D 5E (2014) Should Rituals Have a Cost?

Yes. 1. Material costs serve as a safety valve against unlimited 'free' magic spells (rituals) 2. Exotic material components are flavorful, immersive, and can drive adventure in their own right 3. Material components open up a swathe of design space for spells

    D&D 5E (2014) June 17 Legend & Lore - Playtesting Dragons

I like it a lot. But the 4 'fate points', which they call 'Legendary Resistance', to auto-succeed on saving throws disproportionately hoses casters and becomes useless against melee types. Give it 5 Fate Points that can be used to pass saves, or negate an attack, providing resistance against...

D&D 5E (2014) Time to switch from Wis to Cha for representing Willpower

I mostly agree with OPs reasoning. As I've said before I'd like to see: Charisma - resists - charms, domination and compulsions (anything that overcomes your personality) Intelligence - resists - illusions (effects that 'fool' the brain with false perceptions) Wisdom - resists - everything else...

    D&D 5E (2014) Desired Spell Changes

Long overdue thread topic! Glad you created it. Inflict Wounds (L1): far too powerful as a Swift spell. Dimension Door (L4): extremely weak effect for a non-swift, 4th level spell

    D&D 5E (2014) Are quadratic spellcasters still a problem?

Incidentally, has there already been a dedicated thread identifying 'broken/Opd' spells in DDN? Because after playing for the past couple months, I have some serious contenders in need of the nerf bat.

    D&D 5E (2014) Are quadratic spellcasters still a problem?

Of course not. But they should be better than picking up a stick or rock. Right now they do a flat 1d8 damage at low level, which is less than the same wizard shooting a crossbow. That said, I'm not convinced that they need to become better, because slotted spells are already so powerful.

    D&D 5E (2014) Are quadratic spellcasters still a problem?

Cantrips too powerful? Really? A wizard is almost better off picking up rocks and throwing them - that's how weak cantrips are in DDN.

D&D 5E (2014) Should the next edition of D&D promote more equality?

No. Everything you describe is a campaign-centric decision that should be left up to individual DMs. D&D has no good reason to provoke discussion of such issues. Wading into politics is usually a bad idea for a company that just wants to sell some games.

    D&D 5E (2014) Attack cantrips are a waste of the DM's time

Well not all save categories are equally represented. Dexterity saves are going to be very common, while Intelligence saves are going to be pretty infrequent. Nobody is going to feel pressure to pump Int or Cha because they might have to make those saves once in a blue moon.

    D&D 5E (2014) Attack cantrips are a waste of the DM's time

While I am definitely a fan of some spells using attack rolls, I defintely do not want to see a return of NADs, or even Fort-Ref-Will saves. I still really like the idea of a save for each stat: STR save - resists - monster grapple attacks, hazards like falling boulders DEX save - resists -...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attack cantrips are a waste of the DM's time

A wizard with a typical Dexterity score of 14 shoots a Crossbow at a +2 to hit (AC) and deals 1d8+2 damage. So IMO attack cantrips should be at least that good. Though there is debate on the issue, I personally find a Wizard who, when out of spells, whips out a clunky weapon used by soldiers...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attack cantrips are a waste of the DM's time

I agree. Should it also add an ability modifier to damage? Dex or Wis?

    D&D 5E (2014) Attack cantrips are a waste of the DM's time

Yeah in the other thread we did discuss the merits of why some spells should or should not be attack-roll based. No need to rehash all that, though I don't recall talking about cantrips specifically, but I think a good argument could be made for the player doing the rolling - if just as a way to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attack cantrips are a waste of the DM's time

After a long session of D&D Next I've come to the conclusion that Attack Cantrips really need to use attack rolls instead of saving throws. Foremost among the reasons: it's a waste of the DM's time. In the party was a Wizard with Ray of Frost, and a Cleric with Lance of Faith, both at-will...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rolling for All Spells

The spell descriptions usually give us a decent enough idea about what is happening when a certain spell is cast. When a Ray of Frost is cast: You fire a beam of blue-white energy that chills you enemy to the bone. So this is a beam of cold. The spell is called Ray of Frost. It's not Drain...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rolling for All Spells

Because it's not just 'dodging'. Your shield could block the ray. The ray could glance off your armor. As many others have already said, Armor and Shields without question helps you resist and avoid just about every kind of magical 'ray' you can think of. Fair enough, but I've yet to hear a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rolling for All Spells

Except the math isn't the same. AC is the sum of a different set of variables (armor, dexterity, possibly a shield). There are cases where a spell makes the most sense to target AC and not Wisdom, Constitution or even Dexterity. These cases are rays and touch spells. For those kind of spells an...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rolling for All Spells

No I still like the Spellcasting ability modifier for the to-hit roll for Rays and Touch spells, even if DEX is more realistic. Certainly not STR. And yes, if the attack roll hits, it means the target took the brunt of the magic, and there is no save under most circumstances. An exception would...
