    Who mugged the Sword Sage?

Monk's a bad name, but it's a bad name with a history, and there aren't much better names lying around. "Mystic" isn't bad, but it emphasizes those qualities of a monk I'd rather deprecate. Bleah.

Another Big Playtest Post from Michele Carter

It was my perception that the 3.5e Binder class could be modded, by adding spirits and aspects-of-gods to the vestige list, to unify divine and arcane magic under one banner, for precisely this reason. That's sort of where this discussion about the 4e warlock is going. A class that makes pacts...

Oh yap yap. I'm not putting a ban on anything yet, the books AREN'T THERE YET, I'm not here to proudly announce my abstention from 4th edition on the basis of a few vague blog posts, when I see the books, I'll decide if I want to play them. That said, I would be happier if the books did not...

"Plus One Sword" is crap, too, of course. But everybody's used to it. The distinction is between "some out-of-character jargon" and "more out-of-character jargon." The game has a ton of jargon already...and some stuff that engages the imagination. I would rather not have more jargon front...

[Novels] Sell me on sword and sorcery books

Hmm, okay, I'm an English major snob and a Kafka fan too and I've had to answer this sort of question before. My short reaction is that if you bounced off Ill Met In Lankhmar then it doesn't look good for your getting into sword and sorcery stuff; Leiber's one of the few fantasy authors I can...

Another Big Playtest Post from Michele Carter

Oooh, I gotta second this... having game-designer jargon sitting out there in the open like this really hurts immersion. It's like sticking DPS stats in the weapon charts or something. Well, we know these sort of aesthetic considerations aren't exactly this group's strength... hopefully it...

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to what a Martial Controller would look like?

Two other ideas for martial controllers: - beastmaster (of course this treads on traditional druid territory) - intimidator / morale-breaker

I Believe I Can Fly With Average Maneuverability

Honestly, every time I've run aerial D&D combat on a battlemat, any edition, it's completely overloaded the system and become a total headache. Tagging vector and height to battle markers: ok, fine for a duel, much bigger than that and aaaargh. What I'd rather have is a system that keeps the...

    Why Is the Cleric Unfun?

Here's my stab: Clerics aren't fun – in current editions – because they're mandatory. If having a representative of a god amongst the adventuring party was a rarer thing, they'd be a more exciting concept.

How Much is That Fighter in the Window?

It would be nice to have good mass combat guidelines. I do like to wing big low-level combats when they come up. "Okay, you drive off the bandits; 4 dead, 16 wounded." It would be happier if game designers could use their statistical-analysis-fu to come up with something that approximates...

D&D 4E Why Vampires Suck in 3.X, and How 4e Can Fix Them

Erng, not really, they have all their "powers" such as they are right offhand... they just get cannier and very very gradually stronger with age ( = gaining regular levels through experience)... but Buffy vampires are super stylized and there's a bit of power inflation amongst the protagonists...

    An end to scry-buff-teleport?

    a) I houserule it so you can only teleport to your arcane marks, which introduces some intrigue to scry/buff/teleport; b) Why not have teleport simply strip your buffs? The power of the magic consumes all other temporary magical effects on your person blah blah etc.

Eight is Enough: How Many Classes?

Guy in a golem suit/ animated armor? Master of short-range telekinesis? Quester for total arcane immortality? Re-imagined spellsword? Shapeshifter? All sorts of possibilities. Though I confess I am already sick of this "power-source + role = concept" business and I haven't even seen the results...

D&D 4E Why Vampires Suck in 3.X, and How 4e Can Fix Them

The only treatment I can think of that works that way is The Lost Boys. : / I dunno, I can't see a vampire PC trouping along with the human and elf and dwarf buddies, it's more of a theme campaign type thing. Which is not really a problem I have with lycanthropes... those I would, I suppose...

I miss Dual Classing and the power of nostalgia

Yeah, good gravy do I not miss dual-classing, 3e's troubles with multiclassing spellcasters nonwithstanding. It's real easy to find out how much you don't miss it: fire up a Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale game, and roll and roll and roll and roll until you get sufficient stats to make your...

How Come There Is No "Wish" Spell?

I agree with the prevailing wisdom here as I see it, that wish effects are good for fantasy games, but they shouldn't be the sort of things even an archmage can do daily. I also agree that a top-level "anyspell" effect would be a good thing to have (to the extent that it fits 4e's magic system...
