D&D General Putting The Awe Back In Magic

A 'hot take' that came to me today and that seems apropos to this article: Gygax made a mistake when he made full-spectrum spellcasters a PC option, one that has been compounded by further developments.

    D&D 5E (2014) Am I no longer WoTC's target audience?

It has more or less turned out that way. :) Given the swings of the editions and WotC's general relation to the game's history, I've been predicting that 6E will be my dream game but will be designed, announced, and then cancelled before release as being 'a betrayal of the game's legacy,' and 7E...

    D&D 5E (2014) Am I no longer WoTC's target audience?

Good. Glad you and everyone else enjoyed it. It just rubbed me the wrong way due to my own peculiarities, which is one of the many reasons I'm not part of WotC's target audience anymore. (But then, my relationship to D&D has always been ... idiosyncratic, not being a real fan of 1E/OSR...

    D&D 5E (2014) Am I no longer WoTC's target audience?

I'm too attached to the 2nd Edition setting, and the changes and additions felt gratuitous (e.g., dusk elves and Mordenkainen), contrived (Madam Eva as Strahd's half-sister), and/or overly bleak (large numbers of soulless Barovians), and a read through suggested little worth mining.

    D&D 5E (2014) Am I no longer WoTC's target audience?

5E lost me, Curse of Strahd (the only 5E product I've bought) alienated me to the point I'm planning to sell it ... yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm not the target audience anymore.

D&D General Neoplatonic Influence on D&D

My apologies for forgetting the Seraphic Doctor, especially since my doktorvater was a Bonaventure scholar. To bring this back on topic, you can see some Platonic ideas filtering into Ravenloft and (I believe) Planescape in the mid-90s. I know it from the Nightmare Lands boxed set, which...

D&D General Neoplatonic Influence on D&D

Thanks for the clarification. I've always wondered where the D&D archons came from, as they weren't from the hierarchy I know (Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, Angels) or any other I've heard of. And while I have some knowledge of Neoplatonism...

D&D General Neoplatonic Influence on D&D

Depends on the school and the curriculum. I suspect Gygax and Ward were familiar with it, if only because of mentions of Dis, Geryon and Malebolge in the MM; Greenwood (or whoever mapped out the 'official' Nine Hells) was either less so or took liberties, with misspelling Caina as "Cania" and...

    D&D 3.x 3E and the Feel of D&D

I thought WotC's motto was more "One ruleset to rule them all, one play style to bind them, one game to bring them all and to Organized Play bind them." ;)

D&D 5E (2014) Deep Dive into Descent Into Avernus

Calling it now: 6E will be the first edition of the game to focus on Evil PCs. ;) :p

D&D 5E (2014) Deep Dive into Descent Into Avernus

That's a really deep dive into the lore--unless there's more about it in the Villain's Lorebook or elsewhere in Realmslore, Jander's background as a Hellrider of Elturel is mentioned in one line in Vampire of the Mists (the novel that created Jander) and that's it.

Check Out This Preview Of Chivalry & Sorcery 5th Edition!

This sounds like it may be something I've been looking for--a good system for running a fairy-tale/medieval legend, "Romanticized Medieval Christendom" campaign.

    D&D 5E (2014) Mearls' "Firing" tweet

People are still upset about his handling of the Zak S situation, and the official WotC account doing a Pride-related promo set off the new wave.

    D&D 5E (2014) Mearls' "Firing" tweet

In the irony department, this thread gets resurrected just as there are cries for Mearls' firing resounding across Twitter.

    Geekdom Takes a Bow

Speaking only for myself, I didn't stop watching TBBT because I found their handling of 'geek subjects' offensive … I stopped watching it because I realized I didn't particularly like any of these people. (Now, some of the plot points with Sheldon's mother? Those I found mildly offensive.)

Games That Changed How We Play

Champions definitely merits a nod for the move from 'take what the dice give you' to 'build the type of character you want to play.'

Larry DiTillio, RPG & TV Writer, Passes Away

If memory serves, it was that work that got him into He-Man--Filmation was looking for people who knew fantasy. And the Isle of Darksmoke mentioned above? He reused the name and the dragon Granamyr in "The Dragon's Gift," one of the most beloved episodes of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

Momo is Still Not Real (But Memes Are)

You'd know much better than I would, but I always had the impression Pulling was comparatively secular, as opposed to the rest of those involved in the scare. Am I mistaken?
