D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Actually, I believe the opposite was laid out as the point.

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Have you been? To me its felt more like you've been trying to win the internets by not being forthcoming until it suits your argument. But that might just be me being picky about liking to have all the facts and such. Yeah. "Invisible statue in a room" isn't evocative at all... What you later...

You mean the invisible figurine on a shelf in a hospital?

D&D 5E (2014) Front Line Warlock (Or other caster)

I enjoyed the occasional use of blade ward with my EK. Especially against large mobs, given that I also had HAM. I would blade ward, and still get a bonus action attack (because of war magic). I was quite formidable in a few of the mass battle scenarios we waded through. Fun times.

Nevermind. The goalpost is moving around so fast I've lost track of it completely. :(

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills Redux

yeah. When I see a skill like Dungeoneering, it always makes me wonder when we'll see: Mountaineering, Waterneering, Deserteering, and so on.

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

I find these two examples to be nothing alike. You are equating being able to see everything around the invisible statue, to being blind and not seeing anything in the room at all. No wonder you flat out disallow your PC their chances. You relate scenarios to extreme, exaggerated conditions...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills Redux

Same point I've been making. Sorry, but you're leaping to conclusions here. Just because your players exploit the rules, in the manner they do, doesn't mean, "D&D is obviously a game where you [do so]." Or, at least, I don't believe it was designed with that methodology in mind as an assumed...

D&D 5E (2014) What AC would you give an ogre zombie covered in tower shields?

I'd probably just treat it like plate armor, so AC 18. Nice flavor, BTW. Very cool.

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

To be fair, somewhere in the middle of it, you mentioned you had put an invisible statue in a room and gave your PCs zero chance of detecting its presence. To which, I came in asking why there couldn't be even a tiny chance, based on faint, yet possible, environmental factors. Followed by you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills Redux

Which, to me, is just more buy-in to the end-around method of trying to thwart the players. My experiences, with the type of playstyle I'm discussing, invariably leads to a sort of sub-game. In the meta, as it were. Where the DM is working to plug things they perceive as exploits or holes...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills Redux

But even "with DM approval" it shouldn't be too hard to come up with something that gives you the skills you are looking to add to your character. Because again, it seems like, to me at least, his players tend to "feature fish". IMX, its easy to come up with a narrative to explain whatever it is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills Redux

But the PHB allows for the creation of any background that can be imagined. If your players are as creative and system-manipulative as you suggest, won't they just come up with a new background that still gives them what they want? Again, I think Rule Zero "grown-up talk", where needs are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills Redux

Yes, thank you. When you said, "least likely Rogue to have a criminal-y skill set," I thought you meant they where a criminal without the criminal-y skills. Which, of course, they still do have. Just in addition to a few more skills that help round out their concept. Because they are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills Redux

But detecting something, and understanding what it is, are two separate things. Which is--to me at least--the distinction between Perception and Investigation. IMO, a good trapsmith rogue should have a decent Intelligence and the Investigate skill. Not just Perception. As for OotA, I recall our...

    D&D 5E (2014) Skills Redux

I asked for an example, because I would like to know if the book says something like, "A successful DC 15 Wisdom (Perception) check informs the character that there is a pressure plate in the floor that triggers the ceiling to collapse when stepped on." Because that would indeed be a poor...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

I think another important, but perhaps subtle, issue is that of when the invisibility is acquired. If a creature, currently seen (or known), suddenly becomes invisible during a scene, the idea is that you would naturally effort to remain aware of the location of that thing. So it makes sense...
