    Adventure Group Names

I've never given a name to an party. The game I'm runny now, however needs a name. The PC's party of 3 is playing in a world under gradual attack from the outside with the permission of the King and ruling class in exchange for keeping their ceremonial roles in the new kingdom to come. The...

Wizard attack question - Intelligence bonus

I'm on Korean time - sorry I couldn't respond earlier and fix one of the points. The ranger uses a bastardsword and always has. I actually typed in longsword at first but remembered the correct weapon, so went back in and fixed it... but only corrected one which made everything more confusing...

Wizard attack question - Intelligence bonus

Correction: his Int. is 21, but still +5 Thanks, a little embarrassing to need to ask these basics.... but now I know, and knowing is 1/2 the battle. How'd I miss that all attacks increased at 1/2 level? This helps a lot. Re-read page 274. Um, guess I skimmed. opps. We're going magic...

Wizard attack question - Intelligence bonus

This might be a simple (i.e., stupid) question: My group has reached 4th level and were leveling up. It's a big level up for a ranger of ours - picked up the bastardsword prof. (+3), the 1/2 level bonus (+1), and increased strength to 18 (+4). His longsword attack went from a modest +4 to a...

Ship Building, Sea Life, and Naval Warfare

just my two copper: In regards to your thoughts about re-classing the fighter and ranger, your ideas seems solid enough. However, if it were me I wouldn't put all the effort into this. Instead, I would let the players choose any class they'd like but let any PC tweak any power or skill to...

Ship Building, Sea Life, and Naval Warfare

Glad to see this post as I'm also preparing a similar style campaign and am looking for advice. Good advice on the fire-resistant sails. The better the ship, the more fire-resistant in general. It makes perfect sense in a magic-filled world. As for as gun-powder/canons, I'm going without...

What's the most critical piece of dungeoneering equipment?

I had a 2+ decade layoff from D&D that was revived last year as I started DM'ing for my son and some friends (that has turned into 6 different youth games each week). I had to relearn D&D and make the jump from AD&D to 4e. Funny, this OP is the first time I remembered the 10 ft. pole. That...

    House Rule: Ritual Points

Harvesting! We use harvesting ritual components for our games as well and it works very well. It both encourages/reminds PC's about their rituals, but also makes the kills more fun and thematic. I don't give a fixed ritual value per type/level, but more based upon whether what magical...

Looking for magic items with 'quirks'

I almost never give out by-the-book magic items. I use Magic Set Editor program to create my own custom magic item cards - works great. Here are a few that I've created recently that my group likes a lot. These two eye-related items where found on a Drow thief: Drow Assassin Dagger's Eye...

Weem’s DM Tips for RP Prompting and Immersion

I know different people use this technique, but I've never got around to using it (call my lazy). However, after reading this post I prepared it for my game last night. The PC's meet a powerful and very important NPC/mentor who they knew was in danger and who might have been killed. When the...

Weem’s DM Tips for RP Prompting and Immersion

Yes, I like this combined suggestion. I will try it in my game tonight. Kannik - thanks for the reminder to use note cards to pass along perception or other info to individual characters. It will help them stay in character and describe what they've perceived.

Weem’s DM Tips for RP Prompting and Immersion

So many helpful tips for this new DM. Great posts everyone, thanks. I also use the Foreground aspects most days we start playing. I or a player will quickly recap where we are, etc, but then I ask each player exactly what they are doing. They've learned that they have to be very specific in...

Brainstorming: A Tropical Island D&D Vacation

"Hotel California" - check out anytime you want, but you can never leave... icosahedraphelia podcast had this destination in their game. It was pretty fun and it took a few sessions and hints for the PC's to realize the setting/song/situation.

DM: What kind of (D&D) campaign do you feel like PLAYING?

Good ideas everyone. This thread just makes me want to play *any* D&D 4e game. Where I live in Korea, it's just not possible. I can run games, and do for 20 kids. But finding another DM? Nope. I know there are online games and admit I haven't given them a try, but they don't interest me.

DM: What kind of (D&D) campaign do you feel like PLAYING?

Sounds a little like Indonesia.... which is the map I will use for likely the next game i run -- the one I described above. You can't find better ship exploration maps than the real thing of Indonesia. Highly recommended.

DM: What kind of (D&D) campaign do you feel like PLAYING?

One more: Slaves taken from their homeland, brought to the borderlands of the empire and made to work. All sorts of mixed slaves and free creatures inhabiting this expanding empire. The game would start we the PC's attempted escape. They could join the rebellion. They could Kill their...

DM: What kind of (D&D) campaign do you feel like PLAYING?

Great post idea. I've been listening to Nerdbound Podcast (live play 4e), and would love to play in that sort of campaign - which many have touched on here. An adventuring party, seeking new lands and yet-to-be-determined wealth. We control maybe two large ships - one being for trade purposes...

Open Letter To Local Game Stores

I agree with most of your points. But seeing that I live in Korea and have zero access to non-online gaming stores/events, well, I'd love to walk into a couple horrible gaming stores right about now.
