    Pulp RPGs General Thread [+]

I really like Savage Worlds for pulp adventure -- both modern and "historical" -- and I think SWADE is especially well suited with its robust list of setting rules that can tweak the formula from Tomb Raider to Star Wars. I like my pulp with two fisted science and proto-supers, so a pulp game...

That is interesting. You could also have a "May I Cut In?" fear move to "block" a PC by a NPC.

What are you reading in 2025?

I just started The Lost City of Z, and it has me thinking hard about pulp gaming.

The Masquerade effect feels a little weird to me, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Spending a fear to create an opportunity for the PCs doesn't seem quite right. I am not sure what I would do differently, and I think using the dance to communicate discretely, pickpocket the important key...

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

I know there are lots of other games. I love both Daggerheart and Shadowdark. But that does not have anything to do with wanting to see an actual new edition of D&D after 10 years of 5E. The "D&Dness" of it matters, after all. And people that like 5E will lose nothing if there is a 6E, since 5E...

D&D General WotC is at it again

I always wondered who owns the copyright of soemthing you post on a forum like this one or RPG.net or whatever. Just from an academic/curiosity standpoint. Like, if @Morrus decided to publish The Best of @Snarf Zagyg who would reap the tens of dollars of rewards?

Yeah, even during the height of the d20 Glut, there has never been more new D&D material available.

I don't understand the relationship between these two statements. Is D&D doing okay or not? Is Hasbro spinning or not? They seem to be at odds.

I don't agree. Even people sticking with 2014 will buy those books (if they like FR, of course).

I am curious why you think it is unlikely. it isn't like they ae going to keep the 2014 core rule books in print. Why would they be so magnanimous on D&DB?

2024 D&D Core Rulebooks Off to "Strongest-Ever" Start for D&D Books

Is this confirmed thing, because it would not only be huge, but a MASSIVE blow to brick and mortar stores.

Well, until they block 2014 Beyond content. "Click to upgrade for $10" a la Playstation store.

I mean, sure, but that's not the point. If you are trying to assure stock holders and customers, it really matters.

That was always the intent though, right. They always expected and planned for people being able to buy the modules and campaign settings going forward.

2024 D&D Core Rulebooks Off to "Strongest-Ever" Start for D&D Books

I legit wonder how many paid subscribers there are. I literally LOLed at 2014 Grognards. Anyway, my guess is that they care enough to try some form of course correction if in 2 years new adoption is cratering. The irony, of course, would be that the 2024 edition might have nothing to do with...

Even non-adversary NPCs can have traits you can spend fear on, if I recall that section of the book correctly. More importantly, remember that you can make a move instead of taking a fear. If the PCs roll with fear while interacting with NPCs, have bad stuff happen right then and there.

If we are talking preferences, the worse 2024 does, the better, becasue then maybe we will get an actual new edition. But I don't have any way of knowing whether 2024 is doing well or not. I am running it and don't care for it, but am also burnt out on 5E broadly. I am enjoying Daggerheart, but...

This style of argument rings more adn more hollow every time I hear it. The logic seems to be that people who are into D&D don't know about anything beyond the core books, but that runs counter to the narrative that people discovered D&D because of word of mouth, marketing, Critical Role and...
