RPGing and imagination: a fundamental point

You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means. The Skill Challenge framework, is a system that determines how many success are going to be needed. By the fact it has a system, means it isn't arbitrary "based on random choice or personal whim, rather than any reason...

    Spoilers Rebel Moon-my spoiler review

It was bad. It was so bad. It was so very very bad. Unfortunately it took itself too seriously to be laughably so.

I want my actions to matter

It isn't a case of challenging the GM we are talking about here, but what the actual rules say. Sure the GM can set whatever DCs they like, they could make free climbing the North Face of the Eiger, DC 5 if they like but that isn't what the rulebook suggests. That's because the vast majority...

I want my actions to matter

You go anything to back up that claim, as you know it is a rulebook. I would say it is more detailed than the DMG as it breaks down each skill, rather than just giving ball park examples like the table in the DMG.

I want my actions to matter

I think you missed the part where I said even the Rogues (who got 8) complained about a lack of skill points.

I want my actions to matter

I'm literally quoting from the rulebook right next to me. Climb page 69 - DC 20 - A uneven surface with some narrow handholds and footholds, such as a typical wall in a dungeon or ruins. DC 25 - A rough surface, such as natural rock wall or a brick wall. A surface being wet adds +5 so that...

I want my actions to matter

Except a lot of classes only got 2 skill points per level (and frequently the ones that wouldn't gain bonuses from a high Int). Standard DC for climbing a wall is 20, a rock cliff 25, with armour check penalties and the I don't think it was as fine as you make out. For Escape Artist, Manacles or...

I want my actions to matter

No such thing as an optimal list, at least not one you could apply to every game or gamer. TWERPS has one attribute Strength that it uses for attack, hit points, and skill checks, and is a perfectly playable fun RPG experience. Call of Cthulhu has close to 60 on the character sheet, but with...

    Spoilers Rebel Moon-my spoiler review

There was a very telling scene in the opening fight where she puts the gun under the guy's chin and pulls the trigger and he just dies.

Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa Xmas Special & s1

It's like he left all that baggage for Tennant's Doctor to work out.

The singing wasn't nearly as irritating as I thought it would be.

I want my actions to matter

Gotta say I've fine with either way and as a DM I've used both in the past, even in the same session. To call either method bad DM is a bit hyperbolic, we don't need to insult each other over a matter of style. A lot of games (outside D&D) have actual fixed target numbers linked to the...

I want my actions to matter

Any player that thinks this doesn't understand good stories, for success to be fun, interesting or meaningful in a story there needs to be a certain amount failure before hand. Thankfully I've not come across people like this after pre-school.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

We watched it recently as well. The early chase scene with Indy on a horse just had us laughing at the stupidity of the whole thing from then on. Still it wasn't Crystal Skull, so there is that.

Zack Snyder on his R-Rated Rebel Moon Director's Cut: "It’s not an ‘extended cut’ of this movie. It’s almost like a different movie." God I hope so.

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

Also minions are only ever minions compared to the players. Something that would have been a normal monster when they encountered it at 3rd level, could be a minion when they encounter it at 6th. If the players aren't fighting them it doesn't really matter what they are. Of course they are fine...

D&D 4E Bridging the cognitive gap between how the game rules work and what they tell us about the setting

That's pretty much true of any RPG where chance is involved until the dice are rolled you don't know what you achieve, I'm not sure what you are saying is an aspect of 4E here. The mechanics just say the target is knocked prone, the flavour text in 4E is just one example of how that can occur...

Anthony Hopkins as the robot was the best thing in it and I would have prefered to see much more of him, than any of the other recruits.
