Free League Announces Twilight: 2000 4th Edition

In our last campaign that we didn't finish we were so scared of getting shot that we were crazy hesitant to engage, which was a huge difference than most games with gun rules that you just rub some dirt on it and its all better. I'm going to see if that GM will fire his old NYC module campaign...

D&D General The Renewing Charm of the Old School Play Experience

In some ways my S&W game (OD&D clone) is less deadly that 5e since it doesn't have the crazy critical hits. IME those make the fights crazy "swingy". But save or die and hold type effects that you don't get to save each round against are brutal. Level drain is much harder to remove as well...

Free League Announces Twilight: 2000 4th Edition

I will be looking into this. I have fond memories of TW2k.

Critical Role PSA: You are not Matt Mercer

Actually I love gaming with these guys but they are mostly very casual about RPG games. 20-30 year friends as well. At this point it is what it is. The good thing is they will play any system I want to run and seem to be always coming back for more. Though admittedly at times I want to pull...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

Other than the player of the Monk crying about loosing his levels it was a wonderful session. I couldn't predict how it played out. Last session they made the trip and found a high priestess of Wee Jas to do the restoration spell for 20,000 gold...which was exactly what they had from the two...

    D&D General Rolling HPs

When running 5e only 2 of 6 at my table would take average, the rest would roll for max. Lamenting when they came in low and mocking those who played it safe when they came in high.

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

An epic fight against the first temple of Orcus in Rappan Athuck. With the entire party hasted, PC, hirelings, and summoned animals they started to burn through the forces of woe with speed. Precise archery disrupting spells and hasted lions running wild. The main priest fell and it looked...

OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do You Play OD&D? How Was/Is It?

OD&D was out of print when I started gaming in the early 80's, pretty much everyone was on AD&D at that point. I'd like to play it but I'm running an OD&D clone and enjoying it right now.

    OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play BECM/RC D&D? How Was/Is It?

We played it and liked it, but our introduction was really AD&D and we thought this was the same system. So we quickly were mixing the two together, then dropped D&D altogether for AD&D.

    D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

Less fiddly systems like S&W, or even older BECMI D&D work perfectly for what we are doing. Actually the 5e game I ran went pretty good but I wasn't a huge fan of the system. The backup 5e game we play in is doing pretty good so I think that is a good system for those who don't feel the need...

The Black Dahlia Murder and D&D: An Interview

Uh yeah...but I was just making a quick joke.

    D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

I've been running games since the early 80's and playing with most of these guys on and off since then so I'm pretty up to speed on how to approach a campaign for them. The issue was when I had 10-12 foes on the table and they all had feats, buffs, spells, round by round conditions, that had to...

    D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

Enjoyed playing it, despised DM'ing it. Too heavy a system, too many fiddly bits changing round by round. Heaven forbid Dispel Magic is cast on a party of mid level PC, the whole game grinds to a halt as you deal with the layers of buffs that an average party would be covered in. Just not my...

Morale Checks - How Would You?

I just use the old BECMI morale rules myself. And roll for groups for the most part. With 5e I would modify that 2-12 morale score based on skill checks or other elements of the particular situation.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is 5e "Easy Mode?"

We joke that the backup 5e game is easy mode D&D but we still have fun with it. Its a break I suppose from my save or die heavy Swords and Wizardry game set in Rappan Athuck. Which is like a double whammy of lethality. Last night as they were getting out of there to go back to camp and rest...

Game Distributors Closing Down; RPG Publishers Affected

Yep, though their stock had gotten so stale lately the impact will be a lot less than a really healthy store shutting down. But the retail industry is going to see so many failings and bankruptcies its going to reverberate up and down the chain. A lot of supplies are going to be left holding...
