Game Distributors Closing Down; RPG Publishers Affected

Its going to be brutal. I guarantee my local store is not going to survive this, they were barely hanging on as it was. Thankfully Miniature Market should be able to weather this.

D&D General GaryCon Cancelled Because Of Caronavirus Pandemic

I would wager that millions have had it and had very mild symptoms and never even knew it, had a cold or a touch of the flu they figured. When this is over the actual mortality rate will be higher than the flu but much lower than the 2-3%. JMO of course. We will see how it plays out. As...

D&D 5E (2014) Player roles that no longer exist, and why

We have all in my S&W game. One player is always keeping the party journal, another is mapping. Though they have a hireling now who is helping so I give them hints. And I will usually call one player party leader just so when they won't stop arguing over which stupid plan to implement I can...

D&D General Poll: Have You Lost a Character to Ghouls.

I've taken so many with Ghouls in my S&W Rappan Athuck game, including a TPK. The lamentations were barely drowned out by my mad cackles! They fear the ghoul. As a player its been a long time but they don't have quite the bite they used to IMO.

    TSR Gary Gygax Things

yeah when I read about players pouring over their own drawn maps trying to find out where the hidden stuff is or where something strange might be I think that is a big difference from today where all that is skill checks and whatnot. The deal with the doors would just be a search check of some...

D&D 5E (2014) Would you play D&D if you knew there would be no combat?

I see your point, D&D is pretty much D&D at this point and granted I run an OGL knock off game now. But we play it for a band of freebooters descending into forgotten temples of evil gods and pits of unspeakable horror in search of the big score and it does OK. I'm not really doing the modern...

D&D General Replacing 1d20 with 3d6 is nearly pointless

If I ever go back to 5e I may tinker with a 3d6 system. Crits IME are the driving force of most encounters and made combat crazy "swingy".

D&D 5E (2014) Would you play D&D if you knew there would be no combat?

I would play CoC with a good GM but D&D with no battles? Nope.

D&D 5E (2014) Would you play D&D if you knew there would be no combat?

No. I play D&D to replicate classic action Swords and Sorcery. I like a good bit of RP but at heart I'm in it for the action.

D&D 5E (2014) Paladin, How Are You Righteous?

Sure in 5e that is totally true. But I didn't think this was a 5e specific thread and I referred to a classic LG paladin.

D&D 5E (2014) Paladin, How Are You Righteous?

I find its hard for modern "moral relativists" to play a righteous holy warrior in a world of elemental evil and chaos. I have players who think a LG Paladin should be able to cut corners a lot and the ends justify the means, adventure with unsavory types, etc. They want the powers but not the...

D&D General The senseless achitecture in most official products

Yep. I quit really spending time on stuff outside the immediate adventure for that reason, they just don't care. We started a new backup campaign and one of the players still hasn't named his PC after a 6 hour session. Its just not that important to him. Granted that is a bit too far for me...

D&D General The senseless achitecture in most official products

Yep. I am working steadily towards ending the tyranny of the grid and doing everything with tape measures, real LOS, and actual space on the map. And 1" = 3' will probably be part of that.

D&D 5E (2014) Those who come from earlier editions, why are you okay with 5E healing (or are you)?

In my playing of older editions, or S&W I'm running now, major injuries are almost always healed via spells over a couple days of rest and spell casting. I'm not sure I ever saw a PC heal of major HP loss via rest unless it was in a downtime deal after they cleaned out the dungeon.

    D&D 3.x Why 3.5 Worked

I should say when I say core I mean the basic d20 system and mechanic. Even 3.5 with the 3 core books is more than I want, but yes, not allowing all the endless expansions does make it better.

    D&D 5E (2014) Removing the HP Bloat

Not my experience. I am not sure if any foes they fought in any of the 5e stuff I ran, ToD and OotA, along with some stand alone stuff, lasted more than 3 rounds. Demogorgon lasted 3 against a 10-11th level party. And I gave him max HP. But 5e is very swingy due to crits being IMO vastly...

    D&D 3.x Why 3.5 Worked

As a DM 3.5 made me think of finding a new hobby. The core was fine but all the crap tacked on via splats and expansions made the game crazy unwieldy and honestly more like work than fun to run for me. When I bought a book written just to clarify all the rules in other books I realized this...

D&D 5E (2014) Those who come from earlier editions, why are you okay with 5E healing (or are you)?

We just made it into a running joke that a good nights rest cures cancer and people in this world all heal like Wolverine. I quit running 5e but in our backup game we still play it. So every time we get a rest in you hear "well that huge neck tumor seems to have went down." or "well looks...

Is there a DM Obligation for PC Abilities?

Which is surprising since we all banded together to block one of the brothers from adding his stepson to the group with no warning. Maybe we should have taken Timmy and kicked his uncle out? Alas no do overs.
