Do orcs in gaming display parallels to colonialist propaganda?

Now watch, D&D playing will spike among Klan members!

    Why the hate for complexity?

Part of me would love to run a Hackmaster 5e game. But I know my group would collapse under its complexity. We will see how Mutant Crawl Classics goes when I get a chance.

What are they trying to trick us into with this? I'm suspicious. :hmm:

Do orcs in gaming display parallels to colonialist propaganda?

You are very welcome! My players and I enjoy it and honestly nobody has ever mentioned how using elements of real world cultures, aka the concepts of shaman/witch doctors in primitive societies, is making them into a racist statement on any real world culture. I can't say I base gaming...

    Why the hate for complexity?

3.x was pretty concise in theory but in play as levels rose it became a mess of shifting mods to track. The game rapidly became a chore to run as it was really built with the idea that players were buffed to the max and loaded with gear so they usually were.

Do orcs in gaming display parallels to colonialist propaganda?

I still use pig faced orcs that are Chaotic (really LE) and made in the image of Grummish. They lack the free will that was granted to the children of gods of good for the most part. Grummish hates free will. As does Maglubiyet, and most of the other evil deities so their creations are stunted...

Miniature scale creep is out of control!!!!!

Isn't the new Age of Signmar actually listed as 32mm now? When using 28mm 3d terrain these huge minis just don't work. At GaryCon I was playing Chainmail with 40mm figs and at first I had to make sure they weren't Reaper.... Thankfully Otherworld is still solid 28mm for figs. Just wish I...

Why do people still play older editions of D&D? Are they superior to the current one?

I think the only edition of D&D I didn't see at GaryCon was 4e. But I was neck deep in OD&D, B/X and AD&D.

    What are you currently playing?

Running a Swords and Wizardry campaign. Playing in an occasional 5e game that is on hiatus at the moment. One of the other guys may run a few sessions of The Fantasy Trip as well. Picked up Mutant Crawl Classics at GaryCon and may run a few sessions of that this spring. Also playing Bolt...

Why do people still play older editions of D&D? Are they superior to the current one?

Exactly. For us the rules are secondary to generating the fun unless they are getting in the way. Or just fail to do what I want them to do for my current game. But for us 99% of the fun isn't based off someones using the kung-fu grip feat at the right time, or putting complicated mechanics...

Do you want Greyhawk updated to 5e?

I still run my S&W games in GH but honestly I'm not really interested any any 5e update of the setting and honestly wouldn't buy it unless it had some drop dead gorgeous map that I need up on my wall. Not into cramming Dragonborn, tieflings, or stuff like that in the setting. Maybe I'm a bit...

Why does the stigma of the "jerk GM" still persist in our hobby?

If I wasn't a jerk DM my players would replace me with one who was.
  13. Flexor the Mighty!

    Why the hate for complexity?

Oh I don't mind the hero getting larger than life to a degree but I'm more referring to accurately modeling weapons and armor really. But swords are sexy and pole axes aint. Though one thing I like about S&W is you really peak around level 9-10, like old D&D. So you never get the crazy HP...

Miniature scale creep is out of control!!!!!

Its madness!!! At this point is Reaper 32mm in all but name? The newer guys I've bought were so big they really don't fit in with real 28mm stuff. And my 25mm stuff is pretty much only useful for hobbits. Using my Perry and Crusader historical stuff looks so off as they are more realisticlly...
  15. Flexor the Mighty!

    Why the hate for complexity?

I think a big reason why my group didn't grouse when I moved the system from more complex games ultimately Swords and Wizardry is that they don't mess with the game stuff outside game night for the most part, so the build tweaking loss wasn't a huge deal. Since 2k we went from...

Of Balrogs & Ents: Warhammer “Mass Combat Fantasy Roleplaying Game”

Yeah though I don't have the box. Also have a scenario for it, Orc's Drift. You could tell the game was more about campaign type games than tourney gaming back then.

    Why the hate for complexity?

I would love a game that more accurately modeled medieval combat and weapons, and made combat full of mechanical options and choices...but every system like that I've tried was a chore to run and bogged down at the table. So I went back to an OD&D philosophy and system and things are fine.
  18. Flexor the Mighty!

    Why the hate for complexity?

I've learned that complex rule system rarely add to the fun at the table. Oh they often add to the fun away from the table for those who love build tweaking and such, but tons of options and the resulting mods they create and require tracking add little to the quality of the game. Quite the...

DnD Beyond is having quite a sale

Obviously its not for you if you find the base functionality poor. I stopped running 5e but play in an occasional game and find the program on my iPad browser to be fantastic even just using the free stuff. I navigate via the menu but I'm just using the character generator and sheet not any...
