Dungeons & Dragons Announces Horror Subclasses Unearthed Arcana

I'm not so sure. Don't just look at the nature of these subclasses, but the number. Most setting and creature type books have had a small sampling on subclasses, in the two to four range. This is eight subclasses. That's half way to a Xanathar's or Tasha's level of player options focus. If...

D&D 5E (2024) What upcoming WotC D&D product are you excited about?

Forge of the Artificer is an almost certain buy for me. Eberron has been one of my favorite settings since it first came out, and it'd have to be a really bad book for me to pass on it. With the Forgotten Realms Player Guide, it's not a pre-order but I'm open to being sold on it. I got a bit...

WotC Would you buy WotC products produced or enhanced with AI?

Hard no, for two reasons. One is moral and the other is practical. Morally, these LLM databases are built on stolen works. I'm potentially joining a class action suit against Facebook because they used a pirate book trove that included my parent's works. None of these things works without the...

D&D 5E (2024) Anyone else dislike the "keyword" style language of 5.24?

I think the heavy use of Poisoned and Charmed is brilliant. How do you define what "mental control effects" are for the purposes of resistance or immunity? You piggyback them all on the Charmed condition and point the defensive traits at that. Clear, effective, no room for rules debate. Now...

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

That was my reasoning as well. If you want to sideline alignment or treat it as the personality quiz of the memetic alignment grid, then 5e is right. If you want alignment to matter, to really be the cosmic faction you've aligned yourself with, then BECMI all the way. None of that squishy...

    D&D 5E (2024) "Sword" and Board Build?

Depends on what parameters you're trying to optimize around. Both what metrics you focus on and what scenarios you imagine will be most common. Like, Defensive Duelist having an AC boost that applies to all melee attacks until your next turn is really good if you expect to be holding off mobs...

D&D 5E (2024) Avenger of The Silver Flame build

Most of the build is technically possible. Not the bit about combining a melee cantrip with TWF, as has been pointed out, but the rest is a legal build. That doesn't make it a good idea. Like, I love off-brand and niche builds. But that's why I love unusual subclasses or creative feature...

D&D 5E (2024) Avenger of The Silver Flame build

Alright, let me rephrase. The build you proposed is making a great many choices for flavor at the direct expense of power. Going double daggers instead of having a Vex main hand weapon. Going with no armor for aesthetic reasons, when the usual goal of a Paladin/Warlock multiclass is to take...

D&D 5E (2024) Avenger of The Silver Flame build

Okay, so you very obviously have a clear character image in mind. That character image is also clearly not based on D&D mechanics, and thus fits them very poorly. So my advice, if you're dead set on bringing this character idea to life, is to talk to the DM about a custom tailored homebrew...

Project Sigil 90% Of D&D’s Project Sigil Team Laid Off

Indeed. While I feel for the people that are out of a job, nothing in this sequence of events feels unreasonable. Wizards took a chance on a new business venture. Well and good, it'd be bad if they didn't try to innovate or leverage their market leader status. That business venture seems to have...

    D&D 5E (2024) Is a heavy armored monk feasible?

This would be where I turned first. With the Unarmed Fighting Style in the PHB, fisticuffs is no longer exclusively the domain of the Monk. Sure, you have to double check your choice of subclass to make sure there aren't any weapon exclusive features. But a Battle Master Fighter or Glory Paladin...

D&D General What Should Magic Be Able To Do, From a Gameplay Design Standpoint?

I'm firmly of the school of "Limits breed creativity". Having constraints on your tools or resources forces you to get inventive to accomplish your goals. And being inventive is more fun and satisfying than just hitting your simple obvious "I Win" button. Therefore, I agree with others that...

    D&D 5E (2024) Sigil Review Thread (+)

Yeah, too many folks have been through "Beta" phases that were disguised Early Access. This is a "the software is buggy and not feature-complete" actual Beta.

    D&D 5E (2024) Sigil Review Thread (+)

Every time the topic of Mac support comes up, I'm reminded of this short from Thor, the Pirate Software guy. tl;dr is that making a Mac version is not cheap, not easy, and it was .02% of his game sales. So they dropped it because it was losing money. So like, I feel for Mac users. My brother is...

    D&D 5E (2024) Removing Concentration

Looking over the potions, I notice a few things. It's a heavily curated list, rather than a blanket invitation to stuff any spell you want into a bottle. The effects are limited; no upcasting, and often weaker than the equivalent spell. And finally there's the rarity, which scales the time and...

D&D General Teased Lorwyn-Shadowmoor Supplement Crosses Magic: the Gathering and D&D

So here's a question to speculate on. Even though we got revised goblinoid PC stats for Bugbears, Hobgoblins, and Goblins just a few years ago in Monsters of the Multiverse, there's a decent chance we get re-revised ones more in line with the updated mechanics and lore. And goblins are central...

D&D Launches New Eberron-Themed Playtest With Dragonmarked Feats

Just for the record, Ravenloft was second and Strixhaven third. The first was Mythic Odyssey of Theros with its Supernatural Gifts. They usually gets forgotten because Theros didn't make a huge impact and the Supernatural Gifts were way less interesting and flavorful than Ravenloft's Dark Gifts...

D&D Launches New Eberron-Themed Playtest With Dragonmarked Feats

I have to wonder if we're going to get yet another iteration on the goblinoid trio of PC species stats, or if they'll just reprint the MotM versions as "good enough". Certainly they were already on the fey path at that point with some of the traits. But the Revised MM takes it further, and I'm...

D&D Launches New Eberron-Themed Playtest With Dragonmarked Feats

It requires attunement, and how many PCs have enough Artisan Tool proficiencies that they need multiple available? If all you have is the one from your Background, spending an attunement slot on an item that doesn't even provide a bonus is pointless. This is a minor novelty that provides a...

D&D Launches New Eberron-Themed Playtest With Dragonmarked Feats

Everything is possible with DM allowance. What the books do with these sort of restrictions is set a baseline expectation for the group, from which the DM can deviate as they please. Which is important, especially with groups that aren't long standing ones with years or decades of shared experience.
