D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Sure but if he doesn't like his choices, replacement is only a long rest away. The wizard isn't stuck here, like the fighter. 6 is quite a lot, but more importantly, most DMs, IME, are quite generous in allowing the wizard to gain more spells. Except the fighter choices stick more, are...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

5.24 has taken baby steps toward this with weapon masteries. There seems to be a mixed reaction on this board, but my groups certainly like them.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

I haven't seen this mentioned in the thread yet (apologies if it was - longish thread) but: I always chafe a bit at calling the fighter "simple" vs the caster "complicated." In reality, especially in the beginning generation stage, the fighter's player is faced with much more complex and...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

How exactly is this a good design goal? You're making them weaker AND you're making them more complicated in play. When one of the main draws of fighters is that they are supposed to be less complicated in play (I'm not sure how true this actually is, but it's an often stated design goal)...

D&D General How Do I Help Mentor a GM Making Rookie Mistakes?

I was responding to a different, much later, of post, that was talking about how the person running has the right to change rules. Which had brought up poker as an example.

D&D General How Do I Help Mentor a GM Making Rookie Mistakes?

Poker is an interesting analogy here. Can you imagine if the person running/hosting the game announces that 3 of a kind beats a flush AFTER the money is in and the cards have been turned up? Poker is a great example of a game where the rules MUST be disclosed and known before play starts...

Critical Role Releases New Campaign 4 Trailer

I honestly think they would have tolerated the cheating, if he wasn't also being such a massive spotlight hog. The rest of the group was really good about sharing the spotlight, making sure everyone had their turn, etc. He didn't, every interaction HAD to be about him. The rest of the cast was...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Casting Time Most spells require the Magic action to cast, but some spells require a Bonus Action, a Reaction, or 1 minute or more. A spell’s Casting Time entry specifies which of those is required. You'll note ready action is not listed. This, plus the "as normal" wording really leads me to...

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

Exactly, "cast as normal ..." not cast as your reaction. It's very muddled but nothing says ready actually changes the casting time, unlike quicken which explicitly does.

D&D 5E (2024) Using Action Surge to cast spells in 2024

It's a long thread, so this may have already been covered (and it doesn't actually apply to the OP which is using a staff) but how do you get around: One Spell with a Spell Slot per Turn On a turn, you can expend only one spell slot to cast a spell. This rule means you can’t, for example, cast...

Critical Role Releases New Campaign 4 Trailer

I was thinking more about Exandria unlimited and Calamity. More specifically the actors other than the original critical role crew. The other actors are the ones I've seen treat this as less of a gaming session and more as an acting gig. Combine that with the seriousness, without the game...

Critical Role Releases New Campaign 4 Trailer

As stated, that was one episode. Regardless, that was the original crew run and run by Mercer. I'm talking about the extended cast and not run by Mercer

Critical Role Releases New Campaign 4 Trailer

Well, they've expressly used the phrase "West Marches style campaign," so presumably they will be going for that.

Critical Role Releases New Campaign 4 Trailer

To be clear, there won't be 13 people at the same table, at least not generally . It will be a West Marches style campaign with players at different tables, and movement between. They also said different tables will have different focuses, such as combat or exploration. That I'm very curious to...

We know he's playing an Orc bard, so you're probably not far off.

Critical Role Releases New Campaign 4 Trailer

That's it exactly. The original group, especially in campaign one IMO, feels like a fun game night with friends - nerdy voice actors having fun together. The new group, feels more like a bunch of people showing up to an improv acting gig. I'll give it a shot, but the trailer isn't filling...

Critical Role Releases New Campaign 4 Trailer

Same for me. The first season (my favorite by far) was FUN and the experience you described. It just got more down from there. And both Brennan's calamity run and Exandria unlimited we're just so serious. This look is like more of that, which is just not my cup of tea.

D&D General Odd Speak with Dead Question

This would be a no from me. D&D spell casting is basically consequence free - cast spell get result, every time. As a trade-off, for me, the spell does what the spell says, no more. Now, since this is a "for future reference" question. Perfect opportunity to discuss with the player what...

    D&D 5E (2024) 5e 2024: How does sleep deprivation work?

I did a search on D&DBeyond and the only rule that comes up is from Xanathar's - so not 2024 or 2014, but seems decent: Going without a Long Rest A long rest is never mandatory, but going without sleep does have its consequences. If you want to account for the effects of sleep deprivation on...

    D&D 5E (2024) Tinkering with the Monk

Can you elaborate? I've found the current (2024) monk base class to be will built. Especially, one of my biggest issues, the over reliance on ki to fuel all aspects of it, this leading to overly rapid resource depletion - seems to be significantly better. Now, I haven't seen the new monk in...
