    Mearls on The Core Game

You're obviously missing the point. Or maybe your comment is just a lame attempt to be witty. D&D is a game about archetypes. There are a lot of human archetypes in fantasy and they make up the vast majority of characters. When non-humans show up as characters, they're usually the supporting...

    Mearls on The Core Game

I don't think that "core" 5e will look anything like "core" 3e or "core" 4e. According to the quotes we've seen from the developers so far, core 5e is going to be very small and lightweight. It might actually only be a section in a larger main rulebook that's chalk-full of modular, optional...

    Mearls on The Core Game

The nice thing about race-classes is that they can be used to make the choice of playing a non-human race more special than in a separate race & class system. Traditionally in D&D, the choice of race in a separate race & class edition doesn't covey much more than a couple of mechanical...

D&D 3.x Things from 3e (inc PF) not done well

The two biggest mistakes 3e made had to do with monkeying with two traditional core D&D mechanics: 1. Hit Point inflation: Allowing full hit points + Con bonus for every level past traditional name level (usually between levels 9 & 11, inclusive) lead to mountains of hit points at high levels...

The return of the Male Human Fighter!

This. Morgan Ironwolf as the iconic fighter. ...and Aleena as the iconic cleric.

    Non-Weapon Proficiencies

The 1e DMG has a simple secondary skill system. There is a list of professions. You choose one or roll randomly. It's up to the DM what affect the profession has on play, but you can expect that shipwrights can build ships, leatherworkers can skin animals, etc.

Which edition will have the largest representation in the 5th rules?

I think you can still have all of those things in 5e, just not in the core rules.

Should D&D Morality be Less PC?

Eliminating racism from D&D is a noble goal, but I don't think the ogres will ever accept the kobolds as equals. ;)

    Mearls on The Core Game

I think they'll provide options for both race-as-class and separate race & class. Since there are multiple options to choose from, it won't technically be part of the "core" - each group will decide if they want to use race-as-class, separate race & class, both, or neither (humans only).

D&D 4E Things from 4E Not Done Well

The marketing for 4e was bad- especially that "game remains the same" video.

    Should point buy be discouraged?

I prefer having a wide variety of ability score methods presented in the rules and letting the DM decide which ones are appropriate for his game. None of the methods needs to be labelled "default".

    D&D 3.x 5E solve me this: 3Es and 4Es biggest problem

But there already is one book D&D... and unless the Rules Cyclopedia ceases to exist, there will be one book D&D in the future. The statement: "D&D will never be a one-book only, never-errata'd/updated game. Never." claims that it will never exist. (never = not ever ... implying past, present...

    Class Balance - why?

At 20th level, both fighters and M-Us have ways of dealing with mundane attacks. Fighters are so well armored and have so many hit points at that level that the vast majority of mundane attacks miss and those that hit have to chip away at a large hit point pool. A M-U needs powerful defensive...

D&D 5E (2014) "The next iteration of D&D is a game on its own"

It sounds like a nice way of stating that 5e won't be an evolution of 4e. It's going to be a total engine rebuild.

    D&D 3.x 5E solve me this: 3Es and 4Es biggest problem

I must have misunderstood the meaning of the word "never". As far as the future goes... I don't know the future, so I consulted my Magic 8-Ball. It said "Ask again later". YMMV.

    Class Balance - why?

Contrary to popular belief, in 1e the magic-user isn't all-powerful at high levels and the fighter still has a major role in the party. At high levels, 1e M-U's have very few hit points. They are very fragile. At 20th level they have 37 on average and 75 with max Con and max rolls. On top of...

    dwarf as a class

I think it might work something like this: Classes (all assumed to be human in core) Cleric Fighter Rogue Wizard Class X Class Y Class Z . . . Non-Human Races (optional rule) If your DM allows, you may pick a non-human race in addition to your class. Dwarf Elf...

    dwarf as a class

If they're really going for modularity, why not move non-human races out of the core rules? You could have two sections of optional rules: one for non-human race as class and one for separate race and class. Each game group could pick either one of the options - or both, or neither.
