D&D General Bruce Heard wraps up the World of Calidar

After ten years of work, famed TSR alumni Bruce Heard has announced there will be no future releases for his World of Calidar D&D-compatible setting. The World of Calidar was inspired by Heard's series of articles in Dragon Magazine, Voyage of the Princess Ark in the 1990s, which also expanded...

    D&D 5E (2014) Power Word Kill (variant)

That's an interesting thought! You can achieve the same effect by simply having legendary abilities that don't give you a saving throw. Perhaps the monster has an ability that stuns you for 1 round without a save, but once you've been affected you are immune for an hour. That sort of thing. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Power Word Kill (variant)

A lich made a failed Power Word Kill attempt on our L20 paladin last night. The spell is often criticised, and rightly so. Here's a suggested variant that is more fitting for a 9th-level spell: Power Word Kill 9th-level enchantment Casting Time: 1 action Range: 60 feet Components: V Duration...

OSR Old school wizards, how do you play level 1?

Yeah. Nearly 40 years later (!) and those two characters still loom large in my D&D consciousness. The name Zyx came from a recipe book - the player was looking at the index upside down and those three letters popped out. Rixx was actually Asterix initially, but I made the player change it (I...

OSR Old school wizards, how do you play level 1?

This has been very useful and has highlighted a bunch of different play-styles. Having said that, the most common answers seem to be darts, daggers, and oil. I'm interested in the idea that level 1 characters tended to avoid fights. I started with B/X in '83 as youngster, and we played Keep on...

You’ve cast your single spell for the day and combat breaks out again. How do you spend your turns?

D&D General Alternatives to spell slots and spell points

Yeah. My proposed system gives you two spell casts before you make a check, and a way to recharge on a short rest. So I think it will be ok. I didn't want the magicians spamming cantrips in my system - spells are meant to be pretty cool. The magicians have handguns if they run out of spells

D&D General Alternatives to spell slots and spell points

I liked the idea of a ritual for recovery, but you are right that it might make recovery too hand wavy. It really depends on the DM. The one-shot scenario I'm using this for has a bit of time pressure, so it's probably ok. At the very least, I might say you can only recover your equilibrium...

D&D General Alternatives to spell slots and spell points

It's a Black Hack variant. The spells are level-less (at this stage) and the stat numbers would scale with your level. I think you would top out at about level 10.
