The word whims here rather implies that the players are just coming up with things for the lulz. Which I don't think is a very fair interpretation. Obviously, you'd know through experience if you have players who do come up with these things for the lulz. Or as an attempt to get some sort of...

You can also tailor the story to the character. At the request of my friends, I'm going to be starting Yet Another Ravenloft game at some point in the near future. We didn't have a game Friday because some players were unavailable, so one of the players who was there, upon learning we were...

Well, that depends. In Spelljammer, it was clear to me that the artwork was super-large to make up for the pathetically small amount of text--but that was also clear by putting it in three books (hardcovers to make it look more substantial) and using a slightly larger font size than normal. But...

Why not? The 5.14 PHB is just shy of 300 pages. You can print a book as big as 400 or so pages before the paper starts being a bit warped. And that assumes that the hypothetical publishers don't skip print altogether and go straight to DBB only. Also, it depends on how much info you give to...

The primary benefit was so the people who did the Complete Book of... series for 2e didn't have to come up with completely different histories, mythologies, kits, etc., all on their own. Neither race has a lot of mythology that could be easily plundered. For halflings, you get hobbits and, if...

Butting in. Me? Never. At the very least, I have a concept (like a race or class) I want to play, even if I don't have a background in mind. But getting some random character? No. That wouldn't be fun for me. And yes, I've played that way.

Well, the wizard could still get force damage, or the ability to levitate and throw objects. But I have no problem with elementalist sorcerers.

It's... not. As I've said, D&D does not have good rules for assigning XP to non-combat events. And if I have to guess on XP, then I might as well get rid of it altogether.

My point was, D&D doesn't currently have good rules for non-combat XP. Which means that, if I wanted to use XP but not give it out for combat, I'm kinda stuck. There's no given way to judge how difficult a noncombat challenge is. Someone who wants to give XP for both combat and non-combat is...

Oh, sure. You just won't be stalled looking for someone else to teach you.

What makes Arthurian fantasy its own genre, different from more traditional D&D-ish medieval fantasy? What are some Arthurian-style plots?

I'm definitely going to ensure that the players choose a quest for their PCs. While it's doubtful they'll play knights (yeah, I know, that's most of the point of Arthurian fantasy, but I know my players), I'll still emphasize the nature of the genre and what that means for their characters.

I'd only want that if the classes were like Human Fighter, Human Wizard, Elf Skirmisher, Elf Woodmage... There's no reason why all elves have to be the same if all humans don't have to be. If that means the core book has like 50 classes in it, that's fine. A game like this would either not give...

No? I mean, yes, OK, but there's also puzzles, social challenges, environmental hazards, exploration hazards, and the like. You do those in-game, not during downtime.

D&D has always been very bad at giving XP for non-combat challenges. I even just checked 5.24, where it says you get the same amount of XP for non-combat challenges as you would for combat, but the entirely of the rules to do it is "judge the difficulty for yourself based on the XP budget." But...

In comparison to later damage-dealing spells, they're minor. Anyway, let me rephrase: I'd do this while implementing different combat proficiency bonuses. A fighter should have a better combat ability than a caster. A wizard might get a base of +0 or +1 to hit while a fighter might get +2 or...

IMO, those spell school tags are very unevenly distributed. Your idea is a good one, though.
