Maybe instead of creating class lists of spells we need to have theme lists of spells. Fire spells in this list, Animal spells in that list, Mind-Control spells is that other list. Spells would have to be heavily curated to make sure the lists are roughly equal both in number of spells and...

OK, you know those... I guess giant hexes filled with terrain, locations, encounters, and stuff? They mostly seem to be published for OSR games. I am totally blanking on what they're called. My idea would be for those things to replace a default setting. So my wish would be that the game would...

Unfortunately, unless the game does a better job at awarding XP for non-combat things, I'm sticking with milestone; D&D is perpetually miserly about what non-combat success is worth. Draw Steel gives you 1 Victory Point (XP) for every challenge completed, no matter what type the challenge...

What makes Arthurian fantasy its own genre, different from more traditional D&D-ish medieval fantasy? What are some Arthurian-style plots?

I just grabbed them. Thanks for mentioning that; I wasn't really going to go to the website, but I can't pass up free.

Thanks! I actually just saw a post on reddit about it and the myths, and it did seem very intriguing.

Thanks! I doubt I'll make up an entire campaign frame, but when I have something coherent I'll put it up.

Whereas I'd rather not get XP from killing things.

I'd say keep the damage-dealing cantrips, even letting them scale with level, but anything higher that directly deals damage can either be removed or limited to use with magic items. So you can keep wall of fire, but not fireball. The cantrips are because it works well in a lot fantasy fiction...

In fiction, rogues often are the main damage dealers. A fighter has to get into an exchange of blows in stories and a fight can take a while (unless it's against a mere henchman or unimportant character, in which case it's a quick hack), but rogues typically just kill someone with a slit throat...

This only matters if you use XP. Milestone/story progression leveling takes as short or long a time as you want.

Those are there just there to tell you what the power looks like so you can describe it to the table. What's the problem with that?

Right now, I'm reading through the Medieval Bestiary (well, I've gone through it before; I'm just going through it more attentively). It's kind of fun how many normal animals were given magical abilities. Antelopes can cut through trees with their horns and badgers can inflate their skin to...

It definitely looks interesting. I put it on my wishlist for the next sale.

Yeah, I don't want to have to buy an entire game just to get a few tips on what adventures are like. Thanks, though.

I will probably be running a game in that genre, but when I do a search, all I get is recommendations for novels. OK, so the system will probably be Daggerheart. The actual setting will be Ravenloft. Yes, I realize neither of these scream Arthurian. Yes, I realize that my lack of knowledge of...

I think that's a holdover from when you were supposed to sink all that money into training and/or your own personal fortress.

I bet you can. Especially if you go back to individual/small group weapon proficiencies instead blanket proficiency with every weapon and type of armor, and perhaps relegate them to the subclasses instead of the main class. The Fighter main class could give you the hit points, saving throws, and...

Define powerful. Are we just talking damage? Because I bet you could make really interesting casters that have few or no direct-damage dealing spells. Only utility, buffs, and de-buffs, and things like illusions and enchantments. And that could still be a very interesting caster for a lot of...

This would work. I still haven't had the opportunity to play Daggerheart, but I really, really want to. And I really like the way they scale weapon damage. It's a good way to represent higher-level characters without too much extra math involved or the need for increasingly powerful magic weapons.
