D&D 5E (2014) My Five Favorite Things From Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep

The Traveler's just a pseudonym for this guy. He's really a red-haired elven archfey named Artagan that at this point has pissed-off both Corellon and Sehanine.

D&D 5E (2014) My Five Favorite Things From Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep

The gods are the same ones as the "Dawn War" cosmology in the 5E DMG, with the addition of Raei (who is derived from Pathfinder's Sarenrae). Asmodeus, Bahamut, Bane, Corellon, Gruumsh, Kord, Lolth, Moradin, Pelor, Sehanine, Tharizdun, Tiamat, and Vecna are derived from the gods of other...

D&D 5E (2014) Call of the Netherdeep Previews

The last bit of the adventure takes place underwater in the titular Netherdeep. Not sure how much sailing is involved, if any.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

Personally as a DM I rarely declare something good or evil unless I think it's something I think nearly everyone agrees upon. There's just too much variance in what people believe is good or evil IRL. To use violence as an example, I've seen all these different claims espoused in real life...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

I kind of miss how 4E's Open Grave explained undead by saying that creatures have both an animating spirit (animus) and a soul, and that some undead are sustained solely by damanged and tainted animuses (wraiths, skeletons, zombies, even ghouls) while others retain their souls in addition to a...

D&D 5E (2014) My Five Favorite Things From Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep

One thing I'm finding particularly interesting about it compared to most other adventures is the variety of locale types. You start at a fishing village, cross a wasteland to reach a city and delve into the demon-haunted dungeon below, cross the sea to a desert city, dive into the depths to...

D&D 5E (2014) My Five Favorite Things From Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep

I think this will probably be the first adventure book I run as is instead of using for inspiration for my own homebrew games.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

I'm increasingly curious how much of D&D's morality is rooted in the religious beliefs of its first creators. For necromancy in particular it was deemed an evil act in the Bible, and the one time someone did consult a witch to raise the spirit of a dead king from the underworld the spirit's...

D&D General For those that find Alignment useful, what does "Lawful" mean to you

One thing that I think makes the Law and Chaos axis a bit harder to use in D&D than it otherwise could be is that there isn't an undisputed authority in-setting on what Law is. In real world mythology and religion with chaoskampf motifs, chaos (often represented by sea monsters, or even the sea...

D&D General Is it dark in your underdark adventures?

I unintentionally handwave it most of the time because most of the party has darkvision, causing me to forget some characters don't. The only time I've remembered so far is when I had a combat encounter that spanned a long distance and the enemies had superior darkvision to the PCs, letting them...

D&D 5E (2014) What Genre of Fantasy would fit an Adventure in the Abyss?

I've thought about running an Abyssal campaign before and have done a good bit of research on layers of the Abyss. The 4E Demonomicon detailed this city, Morglon-Daar, as a kind of port on the first layer of the Abyss ruled by a public council of yugoloths, a hidden shadow government called...

    A Question of Religious Character

Great OP! I especially like the idea that divine spells could impart certain thoughts and feelings in those affected by them. I currently DM for a party of religious PCs: a rogue and monk who follow the Raven Queen, and a cleric/bard who follows Sarenrae (aka Raei or The Everlight). I haven't...

D&D 5E (2014) Call of the Netherdeep: marketing has begun, screenshots thread

The players in Critical Role frequently have scenes of extensive roleplaying even just between party members. I'm curious if having elements to encourage interparty roleplaying is what he means.

D&D 5E (2014) Call of the Netherdeep: marketing has begun, screenshots thread

Matt's making it out like he designed this adventure to be particularly roleplay heavy.

D&D 5E (2014) What Genre of Fantasy would fit an Adventure in the Abyss?

I'm curious how I would describe the Abyss myself in a game. My initial idea is to make a safe place to rest extremely hard to come by. Demons and other monsters are plentiful, the environment is hazardous, and there are corrupting influences that can warp body and soul.

Critical Role The Legend of Vox Machina: Bawdy, Bloody, and Funny

For those interested the final three episodes of season one of The Legend of Vox Machina are out. I just finished them myself.

Critical Role The Legend of Vox Machina: Bawdy, Bloody, and Funny

If I understand correctly the next batch coming out are the last three for the season. Given that they were greenlit for two seasons right off the bat I wonder how long it will take for season 2 to be released.

Honestly this place sounds good enough to set an entire campaign around.

Critical Role The Legend of Vox Machina: Bawdy, Bloody, and Funny

I've been watching the episode Q&A videos as they come out, and in the newest one they address that 1) they wanted the party to seem less powerful and experienced than they were in the campaign at this point to make the odds against them seem higher, and 2) the different spells are being more...
