Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

I think 5E certainly is complex and crunchy. I appreciate that bound accuracy and advantage/disadvantage do reduce some of the in-game handling time. But there are a lot of levers and exceptions and details. We play it at reasonably high level (16 at the moment) and our characters have so many...

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

So when you said changing an encounter you meant changing a future encounter? The GM had planned a big battle, but you subverted it by taking a different approach? I would suggest that if future encounters are planned out to the extent that taking a different route changes the game, then a lot...

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

Ah yes, I definitely consider myself a colleague and partner of someone when they decide the entire premise of what we do and have a complete veto over all my declarations and even whether the rules we have nominally agreed to remain in force at any given moment. Very collegial.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

D&D is a gritty survival of the smartest no molly-coddling world simulator physics engine that needs an auteur GM to curate everything for maximum verisimilitude, unless you criticise it for being that, in which case it's a beer and pretzels swords n' sorcery fantasy movie with super loose GMs...

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

    The premise of the thread?

That isn't 'changing an encounter'! That's responding to an encounter in an unexpected way.

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Why aren't the crunchy games with new ideas being published then?

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

Agreed. One of the things I like about GMing Rolemaster (and doing the XP calculations afterwards) is seeing how the sausage is made. Following the process and seeing the different factors have an effect. Pressing a button on a black box and having a crit result come out of the slot would be...

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

Talk me through this please. You've been a player in a game run by someone else. The GM has described an encounter, a boss, an area, or a treasure and you've said 'no, I think it should be [different thing] instead'? You've overridden what the GM said? Can you give me a specific example?

Will the complexity pendulum swing back?

It seems to me that we already had at least two decades of the hobby dominated by complex games, and in the D&D sphere this has never stopped. Many such games already exist. What new ground is there to cover (at least in the fantasy genre)?

You're saying that you've changed encounters, bosses, areas, treasures as a player?

Note for note that same thing happened to me. The guy was convicted of criminal conduct.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Take the time travel, spend your life training as a badass and recruit other badasses, wait for the meeting with the man with the time travel machine and ten million dollars to happen again, and rob him of both.

I'm really sorry that the forum rules or local bylaws where you are make it mandatory for you to participate in discussions you consider to be beneath you.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Not everyone lives in the US, not even everyone that's been gifted $10 million. However, it is true that any income can in principle be taxed. This doesn't legitimise it though, so you would still be vulnerable to asset seizures and similar. You would also be vulnerable to being de-banked if...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

'Hello a strange man with a time machine gave me $10 million dollars, I would now like to ask the tax authorities what my liability is, no it does not come from unlawful conduct why do you ask'

If there's a bunch of other full prescience 6 year olds unleashed in the timeline with you who also want to change stuff, nothing will follow the same trajectory anyway. I'd pay $10 million not to have to redo the ages of 6 to 26 again.

D&D General Hit Points are a great mechanic

Well, this is a 1 in 1,296 chance to get to the fourth d6. Personally I have a good enough grasp of probabilities that I would not be concerned or cowed by it. But if you've had positive experiences with it then fair enough.

D&D General Hit Points are a great mechanic

OK. I had read the poster I was responding to as saying that 'low HP paranoia' was an advantage of D&D style HP systems in the sense of it being a constant concern, but on re-reading your defeatometer/occasional flavour interpretation is probably what was meant. Personally I love Rolemaster and...
