Good deal. Not common IME. You're buying books after all. At the end of the day they're generally going to live at someone's house, usually the GM's.

Have you used 5e's encumbrance, or just ignored it from day 1 (ignoring it includes using magic to get around it)? And what version of 5e?

Depends on whether or not one considers 5.5 to really be an upgrade. You know where I stand. That's not an assumption I think is valid to make, even if I'm not speaking personally.

4e was throwing errata around across the board practically since day 1. It's what they did, and Essentials just had another round of it, mixed with a bunch of new player options. I've often said that 4e's phantom corebook was, "The Complete Errata Handbook".

Yeah. It's a bunch more material, differently formatted and marketed, for the same game.

Do you really think the bulk of the D&D player base has dropped their $50-150 on the new books and is happily playing 5.5?

Using A5e is very noticeable on the GM side, and my players are using classes and heritages that don't exist in vanilla WotC 5e (including combat maneuvers), so yeah, I'd say we notice.

How do you do that when you're not running an adventure path (like the new starter set, for example)?
