D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Do you hate to deal with ammo as much? Because the two are the same mechanic.

Agree 100%. "General" means general, not Dungeons & Dragons, Fifth Edition, version 2024, trademark Wizards of the Coast.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

You don't have to decide anything, feats are built in -- whatever weapon you are holding, you always have all the feats related to it. This also frees up feat slots for cool things unrelated to combat, be it Actor or Keen Mind or whatever.

Do you kill enemies every round? But, okay, fine. You are in control now!

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

You are assuming D&D as it exists, where a greatsword and a two-handed mace are functionally the same weapon. I've heard in 5.5e they all are different, and even if they aren't -- then make them. Let's say weapons just give all the relevant feats. Fighting with a spear? Polearm master +...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

I imagine it's sort of like Call of Duty Gungame, where scoring a kill with a weapon switches you to another one. You kill an Undead Spearman, your sword breaks from the force of your blow! You instantly grab his spear and keep fighting. It's not really punishment per se, more like a mode...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Which is interesting, given how proficiency in all and any weapons is, to me, a big part of fighter class identity

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Well, I'm not calling shots in WotC, and even if I was, I'd be more busy with trying to undo all the damage EDH did to Magic (seriously, who thought bending the entire game around such a deeply unserious format was a good idea?!) rather than screw around with dnd. But also: I'm currently...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Indeed. I would probably tune numbers with the assumption that a fighter should have a decent chance to oneshot what is considered to be a "mook" enemy for their level.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

I believe there's an enormous difference between reading and remembering some thing in the rulebook (like, say, your class description) and reading and remembering a thing that is right in front of you (like, say, a printed handout describing what a spear does) Granted, my perspective on how...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Do you need to know by heart every card in a boardgame to play it? Like, sure, it's better if you have an encyclopedic knowledge of the game, but when you just roll on a table and get handed a new weapon you can learn one thing at a time as you are playing. I've handed out magic items in the...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

What can I say, stop playing people who don't respect other players' time. There's like ten billion ways a negligent player can make the game worse, and they generally have nothing to do with the rules or their complexity. But also... That's just a non-existent problem anyway? What kind of...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

You land a crit. At the end of the turn, you have to switch weapons. While other players take their turns, you have a couple minutes to study the statblock and adjust to hit bonus if necessary (would it even be necessary? You'll have the same attack bonus with most weapons, no?) But also yeah...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

A separate tangent on realism (realism isn't the goal by any means, but I'm a nerd, what can I do?) While, sure, weapons don't get destroyed often, they quite commonly "go offline". If your opponent parries your sword with the rim of their (probably center-grip) shield, it's very likely going...

Fine, whatever. You are being hung up on the breaking part. I don't care if weapons snap in half, I care that player has to often change them. Whether it's by weapons breaking, flying off from your hand or being thrown into enemies is a whatever part, that's not super important.
