    Maybe it's generational...

There was a show about censors trying to get the station to stop playing John Lennon's "Imagine" due to the "Imagine there's no Heaven" and "no religion too" lines.

    Cancellation of Heroscape

Boo. It kind of seemed like WotC never quite knew what to do with it. As others have said, I can't be too surprised given the weird shifts in marketing the line has taken over the last two or three years. You assume it's not selling, but you wonder at the chicken or egg question - did the...

    Map of the RPG Community

I think K&K Alehouse just went over a 1000 members, so it's worth at least a blip on the map. A pirate isle in a position to harry both Dragonsfoot and EnWorld, one would hope. However, it's been down for about the last 24 hours. So it being an uncharted island is perfectly appropriate.

World of Greyhawk Folio - 30 years on

Jeff's Gameblog had a post about a year ago on the fonts used by Darlene on the map, with some cool close ups. Jeffs Gameblog: The Pekulish Script

Advice for a new player bored with his character

I gave xp to Lanefan for his answer, but also wanted to add to it. Think about your character on the campaign level instead of the encounter level. Decide what you'd like for him to do and become within the campaign world. Pick a goal. Perhaps an outrageous one - kill every evil dragon, rid...

D&D is now in (exceedingly awesome) commercial form

I think I'm in this category. And it's not that I particularly dislike 4e. It's simply not the game for me. I just find the strategy of selling a game that reminds people of the game they used to play instead of the old game itself to be an odd one. The reason WotC is doing it is obviously...

World of Greyhawk Folio - 30 years on

And to my eyes most modern campaign setting products look bloated and full of unnecessary fluff that I would never use in my games, particularly forced meta-plots. Nor does any other campaign setting ever published. Those are provided by the DM him/herself.

D&D is now in (exceedingly awesome) commercial form

The bolded is precisely what I mean. They're not going to remember the particulars of the rules, but they will remember that they never put out a battle board or used counters. They will remember that combat didn't seem to take as long. They will remember character construction as being...

D&D is now in (exceedingly awesome) commercial form

I think this is right. Speaking as someone who lapsed as a customer of D&D in about 1994, but continued to be a rpg'er who played old D&D products and other rpg's, I had a hard time leaving the new box set in the store. In the end, I did leave it in the store and bought the Dragon Age boxed...

Can charisma be something more than just dump stat?

I like that. "Why is everyone always attacking me?" "'Cus your character is an unlikeable louse."

    Anyone know who owns Bullywugs?

There have been a number of third party products that have poorly "disguised" TSR/WotC IP by using fairly obvious alternate names. "Dunfalcon" as the name of the big city in the various Castle Xagyg products springs to mind immediately. The old Judges Guild adventure, In Search of Kelandar's...

[Lets's play] You're given total control of Dungeons & Dragons...

    1. Use the D&D brand. D&D computer games for Wii, DS, PS3, XBox 360, and pc. D&D board games. The Ravenloft game is a great first step. Reissue the classic Dungeon! board game with a big D&D logo on it. If I still have an association with Hasbro, D&D Monopoly, D&D Clue, and D&D Risk should...

    So...wut's the deal with NWP?

While I understand why the previous poster objected to a random roll that didn't fit his concept, personally, I would have immediately thought of the wood elves from the Hobbit, and figured that my sailor elf was poling barrels up and down a major river. (The entry in the DMG offers sub-options...

    So...wut's the deal with NWP?

The actual rule was: So, essentially, there was a 15% chance that a character would have two skills, and the DM could choose whether they were assigned randomly or not. I personally think the random roll was there for those who didn't have a ready-to-go character concept (a foreign idea to...

Metaplots - it wasn't just TSR that did them

The issue I have is with "world shaking events" being added to campaign settings that are already out. And while I can't say it "ruined my game*," it has made me not buy any more game products for that setting. If the meteor never hit Glantri in my world, then the source book that details all...

I think TSR was right to publish so much material

If the red box was so successful in 1989, one has to wonder why they canceled it in 1990 and went a different direction in 1991. A direction which ultimately would end in the cancellation of the D&D line by 1994. Rank stupidity is a possible explanation.

Why is the original red box so special

People who weren't around in that time period just don't understand how infused into pop culture D&D was at that time period. It's why I always scoff at WotC reps who cite how 3/4e hard back sell compared to 1e hardbacks. I notice they never mention the D&D box set side of the equation. From...

I think TSR was right to publish so much material

Actually, they're about a decade older than that. The Thri-Keen were one of about half a dozen new monsters introduced in the four sets of D&D Monster Cards in 1982. They and the other new monsters were then included in the Monster Manual II in 1983.

I think TSR was right to publish so much material

The problem is that the TSR products of the time period you are talking about were each very narrowly tailored to appeal to a very small subset of their fanbase. Does anyone really think that? I thought the common consensus is that 1977-ish to 1983-ish was the Golden Age of O(A)D&D and that...

    Do you like character building?

There's our big disagreement. I don't think there are a lot of games where "construction paper guy" and "fancy costume guy" are both going to be happy. "Construction paper guy" is going to be frustrated and bored with something like 3e and "fancy costume guy" is going to be frustrated and...
