How soon do you see warning signs of a TPK?

The main thing I've generally seen as a precursor is, "You wanna go back to the surface, or should we try one more room?" Always a bad idea. Another issue I've seen is leaving bullets in the chamber... Y'know, saving that Sleep spell for the "big fight" when failure to use it now may mean...

Best GAMES AROUND! (NOT D20/4e, White Wolf or Cthulhu)

Star Frontiers (free), original or re-booted. Tunnels & Trolls (not free, but very cool), prefer the 5.5 edition, not that edition really matters much. EDIT: Two more, both free in the same rules-lite, not-so-serious vein: Encounter Critical Mutant Future

What normally happens after a TPK?

I put "other." Generally start up in the same general area of the same setting, but whether they go back to the same mission/quest/adventure is largely up to the players.

Is Dying Such a Bad Thing?

Why? The world's still there. The NPCs are still there. The dungeon is still there. The situation the pcs were involved in is still there. The players and the DM are still there. Roll up some new pcs and go back at it.

Is Dying Such a Bad Thing?

I don't want to play D&D unless there is a significant risk of my character dying.

    Dangerous Journeys...

I have no inside information on the matter whatsoever, but I would be utterly amazed if this were not the case.

    \m/ The Metal \m/

<boggle> What? Ramble On Immigrant Song The Battle of Evermore Misty Mountain Hop Over the Hills and Far Away No Quarter Kashmir Achilles Last Stand etc. Led Zeppelin created "D&D-esque epic metal"! Deep Purple certainly had their moments, too. Stormbringer, for example, or pretty much the...

    Half orcs are real

So, the group of humans that left Africa and became the forefathers of the European and Asian peoples ran into some Neanderthals in the Middle East on their way and proceeded to get busy. "Hmmmm... I've never seen one of those before... I think I'll have sex with it." Sounds like there...

What are the worst classic D&D adventure modules?

My recollection is similar, and I recall reading the passage in DL8, I believe, that stated that rule was no longer in effect for pcs. Nothing about pc plot immunity is in the first installment of the DL series. It was introduced somewhere from DL2 to DL5.

What are the worst classic D&D adventure modules?

My group sort of played through the first one... ("Shadowdale?") We found that it did indeed compare poorly with watching the GM play solitaire, and we scrapped plans to keep playing it. I believe it was the series that created the Elminster as the Omni-Mary Sue character for the entire...

Players: Does anyone else not mind railroading?

Here's what I don't like: 1. I don't like feeling like I'm having a story read to me. 2. I don't like feeling like the numbers on the dice have no significance, that the same general result is going to occur regardless of the result of the roll. 3. I don't like feeling that the decisions I...

What are the worst classic D&D adventure modules?

A lot of people are picking adventures from the earlier part of the 80's for stylistic reasons. Keep on the Borderlands, Tomb of Horror, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, and the Dragonlance series may not be your bag, but I'd say they were largely successful at achieving what they set out to...

What games from the early 80's are still being published?

Star Frontiers (1982) is available on .pdf, both in original form and a recent light revision. It's getting some nice support from the Star Frontiersman .pdf fanzine. See: Star Frontiers - The Official Web Page Server! Star Frontiers: Welcome to StarFrontiers.org ! Star Frontiersman | Magazine!

People who read games but don't play...are there more than me...

I find reading rpg books without playing to be much like playing my bass alone without being in a group. Reviewing rules, creating dungeons, preparing characters, etc. for a game, is like rehearsing on my bass. I'm alone, but I'm getting ready to play with others. But just reading to read...

Do more choices make us happier (in gaming)?

Personally, I do not like games with laundry list of classes, races, skills, spells, equipment and so on. It's not because of paralysis or a lack of understanding or anything else. It's because it's simply tedious. The char-gen portion of rpgs is just not where I get my enjoyment out of rpgs...

Gabe of Penny Arcade Slams the OSR

I don't think he's slamming OD&D. I do, however, think he's doing a disservice to his players by treating it as a museum piece instead of a game that people are still playing. Like the difference between playing Wii bowling and actually going to the alley and giving the balls a roll, I'm not...
