D&D General More Details Revealed for Forgotten Realms Digital Expansions

@GarrettKP pointed out the big differences: the VRG ones didn't have to breathe, didn't have necrotic resistance, and could be taken later as a lineage (which kept any racial skills and movem types) or gave you two skills if you didn't keep anything special. Basically, they made them a regular...

D&D General More Details Revealed for Forgotten Realms Digital Expansions

Interesting. I fully expected them to go the other way and lien into the undead thing. Well, time to retire the crystal ball I guess. Disappointed they removed the idea of lineages, but I guess too many flying aasimar Dhampirs...

D&D General More Details Revealed for Forgotten Realms Digital Expansions

Ok I gotta ask. What did they change with dhampir (if anything)?

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

The argument was if you are an elf, you can pick an origin feat of your choice (such as magic initate or lucky) but if you want to be a half-elf, you sacrifice that origin feat for your species traits. Which means even if the "elf hybrid" feat is equivalent to other origin feats, you are still...

D&D General More Details Revealed for Forgotten Realms Digital Expansions

WotC uploads/updates early morning Pacific time, so not until early afternoon east coast or later in Europe

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Every time people try to fix 5e, they accidentally invent Pathfinder 2e.

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

It was suggested a while back that hybrid species could be emulated with an origin feat you swap out (or take as a human) and that was rejected as a feat tax on playing a half-elf. Then again, today we are supposed to be getting 16 "vampiric" feats so let's see what comes of that.

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

See, that's what I think will happen and it's what should happen. But the fact remains that there are going to be a lot of DS fans who will howl at the betrayal.

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

Magic is magic except for the whole "wizards are killed on sight" thing. Tolkien did not invent the whole of Western fantasy. So a lightsaber would be appropriate for Dark Sun because it's good for stabbing monsters. Noted. Advanced D&D. You claimed Dark Sun was reverting to pre-AD&D (OD&D)...

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

Nope. OD&D still had Gods and Arcane magic that didn't ruin the ecosystem. It had goblins and orcs and beholders and real dragons. It had plate mail and steel swords. It didn't have psionics everywhere. It was strictly an inversion of what came before. So did plenty of other RPGs at the time...

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

Nah my dude, part of the pitch for DS is that it took all the D&D tropes and flipped them 180 degrees. Every race is different, every class heavily modified, the default psionics system, arcane magic dangerous, divine magic changed or non-existent. Almost all the classic D&D monsters don't have...

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

Dark Sun is anti-D&D. It was designed to be anti-D&D from the jump and had only grown more Anti-D&D as D&D has changed over 30 years. Which means either Dark Sun stops being Anti-D&D or Dark Sun completely severs from D&D and Becomes it's own thing. Obviously, the latter isn't looking very likely.

D&D General Is the SCAG Still Useful?

It was a total rejection of the subclass. People didn't want name, the lore and/or the features. So they took what already existed, gave it the generic name and tweaked a few things.

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

Some of the 5.24 species get that already, with spells or features that unlock at different levels (usually getting them all by 5th level).

D&D General 5E species with further choices and differences

The problem is that if you start gating important elements of a species behind feats (or something similar) then people will declare it a feat tax. Especially if it's something important like flight or large size or similar.

D&D General Is the SCAG Still Useful?

Honestly, i think WotC reacted to what it was being told. People didn't want the PDK tied to a dragon. They preferred the idea of old subclass, and they didn't want it tied to the PDK name to make it more portable. So WotC probably scratched their heads and said "ok..." And kept the few things...

Wizards of the Coast Re-Registers Dark Sun With USPTO

It's a side effect of D&D's long history with homebrewing that lots of people think they have a better (or at least different) way of doing things than the official game does. Which is why do many companies and Kickstarters opt for well worn tropes (horror, magicpunk, sword and sorcery...

I just want to point out how absolutely right you are, to the point that some setting's rules felt more like a 3pp d20 game than an actual D&D rules expansion.

I think it's also a matter of why they are not happy. For example, I have no problem with the conceptual changes they made in Spelljammer, but I still find the box set lackluster unless you were just planning to run Light of Xarysis. There isn't enough meat on the bones, but the meat that is...
