Worlds of Design: The Problem with Space Navies, Part 1

Not without running afoul of site restrictions. But, surely you can think of wars from the 20th century where very aggressive nations have attacked their neighbours for a number of reasons. But, putting to one side all the political issues of a space war, let's try to focus on the technical...

So, it's not possible, in your mind, that your table may have misinterpreted the rules? That all of us who are telling you that that's not what the rules say, because we also played the system for quite a while, both as players and DM's, might potentially have a better grasp on the system?

So, your actual play experience that you don't actually clearly remember? That's what we're supposed to use to judge things? The same group that you just admitted didn't actually follow the rules as they were written? That actual play experience? See, my actual play experience tells me that...

Then, quite frankly, whoever told you that was straight up wrong. The game was never intended to be played that way and there are numerous examples from the old Acquisitions Inc. plays that demonstrated exactly why this was wrong.

And, of course, this was just yet another fabricated criticism that was a total misreading of the game. The DC's changed because the challenges changed, not because the character attempting was a different level. So many of the criticisms were cherry picking single lines while ignoring the...

But, even then, it never actually did. In pulp stories, the heroes are BIG DAMN HEROES. They don't die like flies. They carve their way through hordes of mooks on their way to saving the dragon and slaying the princess. Or something like that. :p Conan, Elric, Fafrd and the Grey Mouser...

Except that your Ogre Bludgeoneer (which is the stat for an Ogre Minion) has a 28 AC, which your townsfolk straight up cannot hit. You'd need 20:1 against each ogre minion to kill one, and there should be 4 or 5 minions for each normal monster you're switching out for the encounter. Meanwhile...

Oh, I'd forgotten about this one. Conan at no point was EVER a weak fighter. He was never 1st level, nor did he get particularly better or stronger from day 1. He was a pulp hero - which means he was a superhero from the outset and stays that way in every story. He gets freaking crucified in...

That first level fighter has 3/2 attacks. I never said the FIRST round. I just said in one round. That means our fighter can deal 30 points of damage in a single round without any strength bonus. Give him an 18 strenght and now he's dealing at least 36 points in a round. All at 1st level.

Nope. AD&D monsters most certainly CANNOT have classes. That wouldn't happen until Casle Ravenloft (the module) was released and a monster actually got class levels.

I've got a couple of different horde rulesets that I like to use for large mobs. They work pretty well.

You mean the strawman that no one here has claimed? I mean, good grief, the other reaction is far, far stronger. I made the mistake of claiming that another system might be better for building sandboxes and got told that I hated D&D. :erm: I point out that D&D isn't particularly good at...

No, I keep trying to prove that the point you are making is inconsistent. Which it is. After all, is your doctor stronger/tougher than someone who only knows first aid? After all, that's what D&D says is true. That in order to be a trained doctor, you need to be several levels higher than...

Your statblock is not absolute in any real way. It changes all the time. There's an entire leveling system that changes your statblock routinely. Never minding things like level drain, magical/mundane enhancements, situational modifiers, etc. And mechanical symmetry is a myth. It's...

You'll obviously get no argument from me on that score. :D The truly funny thing is, the whole "D&D is simulationist" schtick only surfaced after 4e. It was an edition warrior dog whistle to try to exclude 4e from the D&D family. That has somehow morphed over the years into this idea that...

See, but that's the thing. Is that a design goal for simulation? If entities in the game should have a consistent mechanical simulation, doesn't D&D rather fail in that regard? After all, the PC's are not consistent, at all. There is a massive difference between a 1st level character and a...
