D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

If I can't find a stat block for one in one of the monster books I have, would probably build it from scratch. If it was in the middle of a session, I'd find the closest pre-existing match and use that, with any bard-like mods to make it feel right (like, adding Inspiration as noted earlier)...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rate D&D 2024

I would hope people are being truthful about their responses, not just bandwagoning on heresay. Since the start of 5E I had been vocal about not wanting a 6E, as I am frankly tired of edition churn for churn's sake (thanks, GW). The 2024 books come too close to an edition shift for my tastes...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Yes to all, 3 separate campaigns. I've been DMing since the 80's, and 5E since it came out. It's all to easy to accidentally fall into the trap "Okay, the players handled that last one okay, they ought to be able to handle this..." and then be wrong in some way (or straight up, an encounter...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rate D&D 2024

I made the mistake of getting the 2024 DMG and MM, hoping I could salvage something from them to my liking (the PHB was an utter loss, so I did not purchase it, though my wife has a copy I have perused). I give it a 2 out of 10, a rehash that changes everything I liked about the game and didn't...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Come sit at my table, and I'll show you otherwise. I've done it at least thrice in 5E alone.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

We must play very different D&D. I've seen 15th level 5E parties get wiped within a handful of rounds.

...Or that they are all up in it. What does WPN stand for? Wizard's Preferred Network?

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I have to analyze how I do things and state I'm in the opposite camp. The PCs are different and more exceptional because of their importance to the story at hand. And yeah, I'm a story DM who cares more about the antics of the player characters over an ever-changing group. It's bitten me more...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

This bothers me. I like to think of myself as a creative fellow, and “just reskin this stat block” frustrates me. Yes, it works - but I like to be able to have more uniqueness than similarities in the things I run. Sure, I might be able to use a basilisk as a “young” Medusa via a reskin, but...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I have no issue with the different methods of building "monsters" vs. PCs/DMPCs. If I want a NPC who will be travelling with and aiding the party, I will build out an actual character. If I expect them to be pure opposition, I'll just use monster stats. Back in 2014, I started to build...

D&D General 5.5 PHB Species Options

Dragonborn, Goliath and Dwarf in that order. Big, small or a dragon, all gruff.

D&D General D&D is now Steampunk (poll)

Its not Steampunk, but its not '70s grim fantasy anymore either. D&D has always been about a decade behind on what influences it, so when it came out it was 60's movies and popular books (many from the 30's & 40's). Pretty much now its 2010 movies and popular books, maybe even a bit closer...

D&D General Crochet, Coloring, & Journals: Upcoming D&D Books from Ten Speed Press

I guess the Book of Many Patterns will go well next to the 1980's D&D Needlepoint kits.

D&D 5E (2024) When are we getting announcements for 2026 books?

Opposite for me. No need for starter sets nor care about FR and Eberron. My interest is piqued by the thought of Dark Sun, but I'm nervously cautious. May come down to whethere there's a Beedles & Grimm version that will be available, and if it comes with a cloth map.

    D&D General Mythos in D&D

In D&D, I can only recall using Starspawn from the 2014 MM. Though I have an unfinished campaign/adventure with strong mythos vibes that ends with Cthulhu rising. Haven't gotten to the point to even playtest beyond the opening encounter, which isn't mythos related.

D&D General Geedis and the Land of Ta: a Community Setting

Shimra are unusual predators in the Land of Ta. Primarily found in the land's lush jungles, these amphibious creatures mix traits of leopards and tree frogs. They hunt near rivers and streams, lying in wait in trees above to leap down on creatures within the water, and use pools as spawning...

D&D General Geedis and the Land of Ta: a Community Setting

Iggy, the Goblin Warlock. Iggy was always destined to be great, and that's what always got him into trouble - or that's what he liked to think. He was scrawny growing up, and often bullied by his mates for his unnaturally yellow eyes. But these "hawk eyes" of his could see farther than any...
