    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Excerpt: Creating a New Race

Exactly. We're seeing the end of a section, "an example in use" so to speak, not the section itself. There's probably more to it than this. -The Gneech

Hello all. New guy here, looking to start playing an RPG.

Well yeah, the best game is the one that's happening at the table right now. :) But the OP did phrase his question in a "should I go with PF or D&D" context. Seriously, tho, either one will work. Pick what suits your interests! -TG

Hello all. New guy here, looking to start playing an RPG.

Pathfinder has a good starter set, D&D 5E has a good starter set. Which one you should choose is largely a matter of taste. PF is a more complex game, but has a ton of support material, both in the official stuff from Paizo, and with its backwards (relative) compatibility with D&D 3.x. D&D 5E...

D&D 5E (2014) Flavor and Mechanics: Examining the Rogue

Nitpick: Actually, d8 is exactly "average" for hit points, it's not fragile. It's normal. Fighters and barbarians are extra-durable. -The Gneech

    D&D 5E (2014) Ranger archetype

I believe the "arcane archer" from previous editions is intended to be folded into the Eldritch Knight path for fighters. I haven't seen a ranger-based version, but I'll keep an eye out. -TG

D&D 5E (2014) 5e, bringing the importance of environment back to the front?

This is definitely true! With the preponderance of buffs going away (and don't let the front door hit you on the backside, guys), the players are looking at positional and situational factors to get the upper hand. -The Gneech

D&D 5E (2014) The Wonkiness of Tool Proficiency

My thinking with disadvantage was that the rogue was macguyvering his way past the lock using the tip of a dagger and a belt buckle, that kind of thing, not just straight-up using his thumb. :P That said, maybe just some blank lines at the bottom of the skill list labeled "Tool Proficiences"...

D&D 5E (2014) The Wonkiness of Tool Proficiency

During Saturday night's Starter Set game, I had a dickens of a time trying to explain to the rogue player what exactly he was rolling when attempting to use his thieves' tools. He kept looking for Disable Device or Open Locks/Disable Traps etc., and the wording of the Expertise blurb on his...

    D&D 5E (2014) So who played 5E D&D recently?

We played the fifth session of my Starter Set campaign on Saturday, and a good time was had by all. You can read a play report here if you like: http://the-gneech.livejournal.com/2364663.html My players don't know that this recurring "female drow" baddie they keep encountering is actually a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Old Ways of Playing

My table's wizard player in the new game kept going on about how he needed "8 hours of uninterrupted sleep" to regain his spells. When I informed him that what he actually needed was "a long rest" which included but was not limited to sleep, he replied, "Uh... I don't tell the rest of the party...

D&D 5E (2014) Gamehole Con Live Tweeting Perkins Panel

As a former heavy-poster who mostly lurked during the 4E era and returned with the new system, I would say that what happened at ENWorld was symptomatic of what we were all going through. I know that in my own case, I went to the Paizo boards because I felt strongly on the PF vs. 4E subject and...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e, bringing the importance of environment back to the front?

This kind of thing came up just tonight in my game: the characters finally decided to take on the Redbrands in their hideout. One of them is the former member, so I gave them a map based on the parts of the hideout he'd seen, including the secret tunnel. The players blocked the door from the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Leonin Races and subraces

I would at the very least add low-light vision and possibly advantage on Perception checks for scent. -The Gneech

D&D 5E (2014) Gamehole Con Live Tweeting Perkins Panel

I can confidently say that in my case, if it hadn't been Pathfinder, it would have been Savage Worlds. As it is, even with Pathfinder, it was almost Savage Worlds anyway. -The Gneech

    D&D 5E (2014) Difficulty of Converting Pathfinder / 3.X Stuff?

In a situation like that, I'd suggest either bumping up the numbers as you say, or looking for an appropriate NPC/monster at approximately the CR you want and reskinning a bit, giving them the bugbear "signature" abilities. For instance, you could use the Gladiator on p. 346 of the MM, and just...

D&D 5E (2014) Gamehole Con Live Tweeting Perkins Panel

I'm very much liking what I see here. I particularly applaud the comments about the little b/w cartoons in the 1E books. That was the first thing I noticed about the 5E PHB, was that the touches of whimsy were back, and that's actually very important. D&D is not a "comedy" game, but let's face...

D&D 5E (2014) Your Players Stole a Pirate Ship and Made Way for the Seas. Now What?

Get ye a copy of the Savage Worlds plot-point campaign 50 Fathoms. It has tons of seafaring adventures and generators for more. It's a brilliant sandbox-on-the-sea. -The Gneech

    D&D 5E (2014) Classic or just plain brilliant adventures/modules

Most of the big hits have already been mentioned; I will second Red Hand of Doom, which is one of the best campaigns I ever ran. I'd also like to put in a plug for Temple of Elemental Evil, which is dense but crammed full of stuff. -The Gneech
