Give me your monster conversion request!

Hit me with a tentamort! Well, no, don't actually do that. I mean, my conversion request is for a tentamort. Being hit with a tentamort would probably be painful. And disturbing. -The Gneech

    D&D 5E (2014) Dragon/Dungeon Magazines?

Every issue of Dungeon is worth getting. Dragon is much more variable, with earlier issues being more generally useful and later ones being more edition-dependent. -TG

D&D 5E (2014) Does this seem to be the edition that was made for splatbooks?

I second that emotion! -The Gneech

Pathfinder 1E How do I make skeletons?

Lye and a garbage bag? *rimshot* Seriously tho, take a base critter you like, give it the subtype "undead" and DR 5/bludgeoning, and you're good to go for a simple encounter. -TG

    D&D 5E (2014) Replacing Use Magic Device

Leatherhead beat me to the MacGuyver ref. Darn it! But yes, that. ;) -TG

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Player's Handbook owners: What's the current condition of your book's binding?

So far so good after a thorough reading and a couple of sessions at the table. It may be a thing that happened in batches, like the smudged MM pages. -TG

D&D 5E (2014) Do summoned monsters alter CR? Or award XP?

My take on that passage was it's the classic "The cultists summoned Cthulhu! Aaaieeee!!!" scenario. You don't summon Cthulhu with Conjure Old One, and he's certainly not included in the cultists' 1/8 CR. If the ceremony completes and Cthulhu shows up, the party gets the XP for encountering him...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fair Undead encounter for 1st or 2nd level charterers

First level characters are mighty squishy in 5E. If you want a big, flashy fight, I recommend: Skeletons are CR 1/4, so if you want to throw them at the party, start with the necromancer in some kind of "dark shield" magic and just send a wave of 2-3 skellys by themselves at the PCs while they...

    D&D 5E (2014) skill challenges?

I liked skill challenges on paper, but at the table they always seemed very forced, especially if I told the players they were actually taking part in one, because there was generally one character very well suited to the challenge (but who could only make one skill check per round) while the...

D&D 5E (2014) Is the 5e Monster Manual the best MM ever?

Okay, now I've had time to give it a serious looksee, my actual thoughts on the MM are here: http://gneech.com/rpg/monsters-rar/ Enjoy!

    D&D 5E (2014) Prestige classes in Next?

Uder is speaking only for himself in saying that we am us. I for one am not us and don't intend to be! -The Gneech

D&D 5E (2014) I'm feeling really good about 5E, but where to from here?

Well Goodman Games has already jumped into the fray, and I suspect there'll be a pretty strong PDF adventures market; WotC has an "Elemental Evil" event coming after Tyranny of the Dragons finishes, and will probably keep doing such things for a while. I suspect that if we buy them, the...

D&D 5E (2014) Is the 5e Monster Manual the best MM ever?

Finally got ahold of my copy. And I gotta say, yeah, it's pretty danged awesome. Best ever? Really tough call. But certainly the best in a long time! -The Gneech

    5E Summoner Class, First Pass

Having finally gotten ahold of a Monster Manual, I agree with you. I didn't realize how severely CR had been skewed downward. I'll definitely take that into account in the next pass. -TG

    Artificer Class

It may be beyond the scope of what you have in mind, but it occurs to me you could make alchemy one of the artificer traditions and emulate the Pathfinder Alchemist as another subclass. Just a thought. -TG

What is your Favorite Version of D&D?

Actually, both statements are reasonably accurate. A lot of the character abilities could be described using the "encounter" and "daily" language, if you wanted to do so (which I don't, but it could be done), short rests act a bit like healing surges, etc. So it did adopt a number of 4E's...

What is your Favorite Version of D&D?

I never much liked the D&D rules during 1E/2E era, although I loved the concept of tabletop RPGs and enjoyed a lot of the support material (World of Greyhawk, dungeons, etc.) and used them to play things like Tunnels and Trolls and later Fantasy HERO. 3.0 was my fave when it came out, 3.5 was my...

    D&D 3.x Good 3.0E/3.5E/Pathfinder Adventures

Most of the 3.x Dungeon magazine adventures have at least a little merit, and some are flat-out awesome. One called "Totentanz" in issue 90 made a big impression on my group. Many of the Dungeon Crawl Classics series are good. The same game that went through Totentanz went through Curse of the...
