D&D 5E (2014) Is the 5e Monster Manual the best MM ever?

It's the best one ever to come out in 2014! ...Beyond that, I don't know yet. It's still in shipment. -The Gneech

    D&D 5E (2014) Lost wagon of Phandelver

My group hid the horses and wagon via a Survival check; they spent a grand total of about 4 hours dealing with the goblins, so I rolled once to see if any wandering monsters had come along and caused a ruckus. The dice were kind to the PCs, and the wagon was undisturbed. -TG

    Rewarding Proactive Play

He, actually, but more importantly, he's been one of my closest friends since 1985 and loves to play with the "gamey" part of the game (the tactical aspect), so just casually booting him out isn't really something I'm keen to do. I neither expect Flinchy to be proactive nor worry about it when...

    D&D 4E Best 4e Adventure to Adapt?

Actually, the 4E Tomb of Horrors has a lot of neat stuff in it that I'd like to rescue for a future game of my own... -TG

    Rewarding Proactive Play

Well, that's actually one of the reasons the blank stares were such a blow this time around– I told them explicitly at the beginning of the campaign in question to come up with a character they've always wanted to play but never had the opportunity to before, on the grounds that "if it's in D&D...

D&D 5E (2014) Does this seem to be the edition that was made for splatbooks?

5E definitely has room for expansion and customization– campaign-specific backgrounds, domains, and feats seem to be expected, if not all but required for some settings. I have a hard time believing WotC could resist the lure of splatbooks, but if they release worldbooks, there will almost...

D&D 5E (2014) Allowing more open spell lists?

Sorta makes the bard's spell secrets ability kinda superfluous if every spellcaster already has it. I don't really see it "breaking," anything, but I don't see that it adds much, either, just sorta dilutes the spellcasting classes. -TG

I haven't, but that's a neat idea that I shall play with. Thanks! -TG

    5E Summoner Class, First Pass

Working up a summoner class, as a Sorcerous Origin, and interested in feedback. It's on my website, here: http://gneech.com/rpg/summoner-subclass-for-dd-5e-first-pass/ ...whattya think, sirs? -The Gneech

    Rewarding Proactive Play

That's probably the way to go if I try to go back to the Eberron game; it'd have to be rebooted/converted into 5E anyway, so I could use that as a way to add some structure. The group operates reasonably well in that mode in a Ghostbusters campaign I've got going in Savage Worlds, although again...

D&D 5E (2014) I'd like to know the thinking behind this....

Okay, of those, I've heard of "Merlin," and excepting Merlin were all created long after Dungeons & Dragons was. How exactly does that make an archetype? :p Points for including Merlin tho, I'll concede that one. In any case, it's all an argument of taste, which can't really be resolved...

Pathfinder 1E which setting do you use in your pathfinder games?

I have done homebrew, Greyhawk, and Eberron in PF, but mostly homebrew. Never could get into Golarion as a GM, but I would perfectly happy to play there. -TG

    Summon Monster for 5E

Any news on how this has worked out? One of my players has a summoner in the Pathfinder game and I'm looking at how to convert him or even if it's feasible. I was looking at the ranger's animal companion as a launch point, but it doesn't do much good to be a summoner who can't, y'know, summon...

    Rewarding Proactive Play

It wasn't as formal as that, but I did have one-on-one discussions with the players who I thought likely to be influenced by such a thing, and I think it's helped. Here's the context: Player One: Loves gaming more than life itself. Likes to bounce around like a pinball breaking things and get...

    D&D 5E (2014) How good are Barbarians?

Still in low levels here, but so far a nice hp sponge (not quite as impervious as a high-AC tank, but still very durable) and does very respectable damage. Probably be the first one to die, but will be grinning when it happens. -The Gneech

D&D 5E (2014) My powergamer players wants to be a bard.

The great thing about mix/maxing a bard is that all it does is make them better at buffing the rest of the party. So, still a net gain. ;) But yes, spell secrets is the thing to watch out for. Handy ability if your group is missing a wizard or a cleric and the bard is pinch-hitting for that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Prestige classes in Next?

The prereqs on prestige classes are one of the reasons you ended up seeing "builds" for characters; a player in my group always planned his characters out at least six levels in advance, and I was certainly prone to doing it too as a player. Thus you ended up with people dipping into this class...

D&D 5E (2014) I'd like to know the thinking behind this....

That's not what I was suggesting. By "classic archetype," I'm referring to the archetypes of centuries of fantasy fiction, myth, legend, and faerie stories, not the relatively recent phenomenon of players handbooks. :P Even the half-orc has precedent in Tolkien, if only by implication (IIRC is...

D&D 5E (2014) I'd like to know the thinking behind this....

I dislike the inclusion of tieflings as a core race in 5E for the same reason I did in 4E, it's not a classic archetype (even by D&D standards) but a world-specific one, and as such it belongs in the sourcebook for that world or briefly summarized in the MM rather than the core player rules...

D&D 5E (2014) We are betting a LOT on the DMG.... will it deliver?

Page 42 was supposed to be something the DM could grab on the fly when traps or hazards appeared in the middle of a session, not the hard and fixed value of any and every trap people came upon. If people were making boring traps with it, that's because the traps were boring, not because there...
