D&D 5E (2014) as a new DM, how do I handle a group of wanna be thieves?

You could also switch to Paranoia, which sounds like it's closer to what they want to play. -TG

D&D 5E (2014) We are betting a LOT on the DMG.... will it deliver?

We need a "Some people won't be satisfied no matter how good it is" option. :p -TG

    D&D 5E (2014) Flanking

According to Mike Mearls, they removed flanking because there was too much confusion of how it worked with large+ creatures; given the desire to move to mapless encounters, it's also way too fiddly. For the rogue, they added the "...if there's another creature hostile to your target within 5'...

    D&D 5E (2014) Encounter Building with a 7 player party

At seven players, you're getting dangerously close to "split into two table and elect callers" territory; I can't imagine any given player getting satisfactory spotlight time. :uhoh: With that many players, you might want to switch to an open table setup, a la The West Marches. In any case I...

D&D 5E (2014) Legendary and Lair as tools for every level.

As long as the hazards in the lair don't tax the PCs' resources too much, you should be all right. At low levels, much of the party's efforts are spent on just keeping the members up off the floor from round to round, so you don't want to make that impossible. -TG

Give me your monster conversion request!

I would suggest making Catfall a reaction. Also, some indicator of how the claws interact with a monk's martial arts would be good. (My own suggestion is to say they can be used as monk weapons.) -The Gneech

    D&D 5E (2014) Called Shots

This is pretty much what I do, and then it's on a case-by-case basis. If you can inflict the "prone" or "grappled" condition with an opposed check, it doesn't seem unreasonable to be able to inflict "deafened" for a round by boxing someone's ears or "stunned" by kicking the wind out of them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Combining player-directed search with skill-based searching

I vacillate on this; in "the old days" we got sick and tired of "a single 100 gp diamond buried in an urn full of broken glass" style treasure shenanigans (popular in modules of a certain era)– especially when the only way to find treasure was to stand around searching every possible nook while...

D&D 5E (2014) Would you rebuy all the books if they were updated?

I'll have to see what it's like when the time comes. The 3.0-3.5 upgrade was totally worth it; the SWRPG to Star Wars Saga Edition was worth it and then some. Other versions, not so much. There's not enough data to say in this case... so far I haven't encountered any major holes (but I've just...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Monster Manual: I think the really nice art detracts from the mediocre functionality of the book.

This thread just made remember when Dragon magazine (the paper one) ran a big article on calculating the XP value of DM-created monsters, and it was a huge deal. Expectations have certainly changed over the years! -The Gneech

    D&D 5E (2014) Undead, how charming...

Hmm... a charmed skeleton is kind of a bizarre notion; it implies a level of 'personality' that I don't normally associate with them. Normally I pretty much think of skeletons as being mindless, and controlling the undead being the province of clerics and/or necromancers rather than bards. Must...

    D&D 5E (2014) Monsters You Miss

I agree! If I had my wish, Paizo would be publishing "classic D&D flavor" adventures for 5E, and "Pathfinder flavor" adventures for PF. I would consider that the best of both worlds! -The Gneech

    D&D 5E (2014) Monsters You Miss

This is a Paizo beastie, isn't it? Not that WotC hasn't pulled in OGL 3rd party stuff before, but I kinda doubt they're likely to do it again. -TG

D&D 5E (2014) If party short rests in a dungeon room

Last night in my Starter Set game, the players surprised me by deciding to take a short rest in the Cragmaw Hideout after clearing about half of it. Cragmaw Hideout is small, only about six rooms, but it's pretty bisected into two halves that don't like each other much and have a noisy waterfall...

Which monster books do you own?

Lots of 3pp books, especially for 3.x. Also, I sort of Shroedinger's Own the 5e MM: it's pre-ordered, but I don't actually have it in my possession yet. Therefore I simultaneously own it, and do not own it. -The Gneech

D&D 5E (2014) Starter Set First Session Play Report

First session report, here. Overall opinion? So far, so good. Not that different at first level from 3.x/Pathfinder, but definitely quick and enjoyable. -The Gneech
