I love puzzles but they're hard to pull off convincingly without the old "mad wizard is testing you" routine. What puzzles I tend to use are more situational -- i.e., figuring out that the Gem of MacGuffin is on the boss's henchman rather than on the boss himself and taking the henchman out...

Yeah, the complexity and challenge level of the encounter makes a big difference in PF -- a handful of orcs will be chopped up in a matter of minutes, whereas a necromancer riding a dragon being backed up by a cluster of mohrgs and spectres will take all night. The thing with 4E by comparison...

Have you ever played 3.x? Because it's pretty similar to that. If not, I'd say compared to 4E the overall fights are shorter, but you go longer in between individual actions as a player, since you're not constantly shifting, interrupting, and so forth. A fight that would take an hour in 4E...

Yup, it's Perception. "Intentionally searching for stimulus is a move action." If you want a rogue to have a chance to automatically spot traps, take the Trap Spotter rogue talent. If you're just ransacking a room, that's an extended Perception check. -The Gneech :cool:
