Help me make WotC adventures better.

The tough part is doing both of these at once! :) It can be done, of course, by varying locales, encounter goals, that kind of thing. But it can be tricky to pull off. -The Gneech

    FORKED THREAD: Best NON-WotC 4E adventures...and why?

Um ... *thinks* Well, Sellswords of Punjar is pretty neat, as far as it goes, but that's more for the Lankhmar-ish feel of the setting than for anything having to do with the actual adventure itself. Beyond that ... I got nuthin' right now. I'll keep my eyes open. -The Gneech

4e increased my DM prep time...

It sounds like you're suffering from a bit of "performance anxiety" with the encounter design, which makes sense given the way 4E has largely been presented. If you look at the modules, all the encounters are these enormous and complex set pieces with pits here, and controllers there, and "wonky...

    FORKED THREAD: Best NON-WotC 4E adventures...and why?

Does it count if my favorite non-WotC adventures are TSR adventures? :) 'cos if so, I've always been fond of The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh and Destiny of Kings, due to their engaging storylines and terrific sense of "place," as well as the ancient Mayfair (I think it was) Evil Ruins, although...

What D&Disms have you never liked?

Most of the D&Disms that bugged me were ameliorated with 3E, actually. The big one was "I am thy class, thou shalt have no other class but me," which made you have to jump through hoops to make a fighter with a little magical zing, or a rogue who might want to trade some of his ability to scale...

Help me make WotC adventures better.

Is that like the NPC plot tangents hinted at in Thunderspire Labyrinth that tended to be more interesting than the actual story? ;) I think we may be seeing a pattern here. -The Gneech

    The Truth About 4th Edition.

I don't see what there is in the interview to get hung up about; it's all pretty old news and dull news at that. Nowhere does anybody say anything close to calling people sociopaths. -The Gneech

Help me make WotC adventures better.

Yes, what RC said. :) I don't care about the PoL setting -- but I want a very flavorful description of this dungeon. -The Gneech

Help me make WotC adventures better.

Heyas Rodney! :) You're a brave, brave man. ;) And while I have my issues w/ 4E, I'm going to try to keep them separated from my response as much as possible (unless they really are germane). FIRST: What makes a good adventure? One of the things I liked "in the old days" (say, "Sinister Secret...

    Flip mats?

I have the Theater, Cathedral, and Ships maps, and like them quite a bit, even though I haven't had immediate use for the first two yet. I do recommend that you roll or hang them up a day or two before your game, to get the creases to calm down a bit. -The Gneech

Dear 4e, Please Stop with the Horrible Portmanteaus!

    Monsters as PCs ???

Thanks. :) Ironically enough, my attempt at 4E fell through, although it was a valiant effort. The players just didn't like it that much. Not sure if it was the rules, the setting, or just that the characters didn't gel, although I suspect that at least some of it was, as you say, a lack of...

Right here at the dining room table. It can also be used for eating at, if we absolutely have to. -The Gneech

    Monsters as PCs ???

Well, those were just off-the-cuff examples to get the idea across, so the numbers probably need more serious crunching. :) -The Gneech

Why do you buy published adventures?

Well, I buy them to mine for cool ideas, but I also buy them to run when I'm too busy to build my own. I often start with a pre-written and customize the heck out of it, sort of like taking a box of pancake mix and adding my own blueberries, so to speak. The retro-style mods (like Goodman...

Dear 4e, Please Stop with the Horrible Portmanteaus!

I must agree that the 4E nomenclature makes my teeth itch, starting with "Feywild" and "Shadowfell" and moving on from there. On the other hand, we already had "Underdark" and "Duskblade," so I guess there's not a whole lot of room to complain. But it would be nice for the mangling of the...

    What setting are you using?

I am currently using a homebrew that grew up around Elsir Vale from Red Hand of Doom, but it's very generic. The cleric worships Lathander, but that's the closest thing to a "setting" tie there is. I did have a long-running Greyhawk game, and if I were going to pick a standard setting, that...

    Monsters as PCs ???

I handle this basically the same way 4E does: for critters that aren't that far out there, I create a custom comparable-to-human "player race" that has reasonable stat bonuses and a feasible "signature ability" associated with the critter. For example, minotaurs would get +2 Str, +2 Con, -2...

Saga Encounter Building by XP Budget, Revisited

It looks worse on paper than it is in practice. The short version: "Subtract half of the players' ship CL from the enemy ships' CL." Just remember to remove the "default crew" modifier from the players' ship CL first. -The Gneech
