D&D 5E (2014) Ack! Sleeping in Hobgoblin Barracks (Lost Mine of Phandelver)

My one big caveat with this is: tell the players what's happening and roll the dice on the table before just summarily ruling they're automatically captured or whatever. That will at least help the players feel like it was the dice that put them into this fix, and not the DM. ('cause you know...

CODENAME: MORNINGSTAR Kickstarter Launched - and it's for PATHFINDER!

The things that I know Hero Lab does are character creation, in-game status/initiative/damage tracking, and some encounter building, plus a lot of campaign customization. But I've only scratched the surface of Hero Lab, so I don't know what else it can do. -The Gneech

CODENAME: MORNINGSTAR Kickstarter Launched - and it's for PATHFINDER!

A bit late to the party, aren't they? (He said, updating his Hero Labs dataset.) This amuses me for some reason that I can't identify. I wish 'em well, but, I dunno, I don't think this will shake the pillars of heaven. -The Gneech

D&D 5E (2014) Ack! Sleeping in Hobgoblin Barracks (Lost Mine of Phandelver)

"You wake up covered in spiderwebs, with a drow mage standing over you. 'Welcome to my parlor,' he says with a cruel sneer. 'What brings you here...?'" -The Gneech

    D&D 5E (2014) XP for Gold in 5E?

It's worth noting, that this boils down to about the same amount of GP for everyone, and then a number of magic items of varying quality based on level (e.g., "three uncommon and two rare items"). -The Gneech

    D&D 5E (2014) diagonals

Basically 1-2-1 is suggested if you don't care for 1-1. -The Gneech

    D&D 5E (2014) Good Low Level Sandbox

I was gonna say, LMoP in the Starter Set is a great starter sandbox, and has the advantage of not needing conversion. ;) -The Gneech

New 5E Adventures Coming From Goodman Games

Certainly Glitterdoom was somewhere halfway between "an adventure" and "a side-trek," roughly the size of an old Dungeon magazine adventure. Good for what it was, but felt lightweight compared to the traditional module size. -The Gneech

D&D 5E (2014) Help! Getting My Group to Thundertree (Lost Mine of Phandelver)

If your players are anything like mine, they're not likely to have much trouble in the mines if they're 4th level. I've had to beef up everything to prevent a cakewalk. Fortunately, "add one or two more" to any given encounter usually does the trick. -TG

    D&D 5E (2014) XP for Gold in 5E?

There are training rules in the DMG, but they're pretty anemic. It seems to me that the best way to implement an XP-for-gold system would be to calculate XP-by-encounter normally, but then simply put that much treasure into various hoards etc. instead of awarding the XP for combat. Then award 1...

    D&D 5E (2014) Monster Manual 2 or Player's Handbook 2?

Given the OSR-love that's gone into 5E, I agree, the second monster book should be the Fiend Folio, while the third is "Monster Manual II." ;) -The Gneech

D&D 5E (2014) My group is questioning everyone.

My players have really taken to capturing their intelligent foes to turn in for a reward if there is one. I like it, myself, but I can see how trying to RP every mook who's been captured could get old fast. I think the best compromise is to play out the first few, then summarize beyond that...

Experience Points and the Three Pillars of Adventure (Long)

I guess it'd be more accurate to say "players who are reluctant to explore" rather than "won't leave the safety of town." My particular group has a tendency to only want to go where a great big arrow says "PLOT HERE!" ... to the point where they've told me I'm stingy with loot because they...

Got All 3 Books? Which One's Your Favourite?

They're all pretty amazing, but I gotta go with the Monster Manual, partly for the whimsical illustrations, but also because RAR! MONSTERS! -The Gneech

D&D 5E (2014) What Are Your Favorite Parts of the New DMG?

Honestly? My favorite part is the painting of Baba Yaga's hut. But there's a ton of great stuff in there! -The Gneech

D&D 5E (2014) DMG help with converting Pathfinder adventures to 5e?

Converting from any "fantasy adventure" system should be fairly trivial with 5E as long as, like Emirikol said, you look at the at what the creature or trap actually does in narrative terms in the adventure-as-written, then find (or whip up) a fairly close 5E equivalent to plug in its place...

D&D 5E (2014) With the Holy Trinity out, let's take stock of 5E

Ditto. What I want from now on is shelves of single-adventure modules that I can string together, run independently, or just disassemble for desired component parts. In short, I want Dungeon magazine back. APs? No thank you. Splatbooks? Mmmmmmaaybe, but probably nah. Just a metric boatload of...
