Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Re: small venues Most of the ones I loved that were outside of concentrated music/arts communities (like Austin’s 6th Street or Dallas’ Deep Ellum) have been replaced by strip clubs, restaurants, and parking lots.🤷🏾‍♂️

The official EN World puppy/doggo thread

This grrrl was probably the smartest border collie we’ve ever had: When we got her as a puppy, she was so small that she could have easily escaped under the car gate to our yard. So for quite a while, we had to take her into the yard on a leash. When she grew a bit more, we tried to let...

Yeah, pretty much. It’s kind of the musical instrument version of soda vs pop vs soft drink vs etc. Like “soft drink” or “ soda” is the most formal name for non-alcoholic carbonated beverages, “violin” is the formal instrument name. “Fiddle” is a nickname, and can be applied to any member of...

The hardanger? It’s definitely its own thing. I think they originated in Northern Europe.

    Anticipatory Grief

I haven’t been present for the deaths of all my pets, but I have for all but one over the past 20 years*. It hurts- I’m tearing up a bit as I write this- but I personally think they were comforted by my hugs, pats & words. * she passed in her sleep, cookie under her paw.

Violins and fiddles ARE the same…except for instruments like the Hardanger. It has extra, sympathetic strings that give a different sound.

    Do you observe Thanksgiving?

That’s when you show them your brown pants. …regardless of the color they were when you entered the room.

As a cellist, I also have to point out the violin octet family, which is closely related to the violin family…but ain’t quite the same. And then there’s the Hardanger fiddle…

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

The best bang for the buck show I ever saw was paying $10 to see Swervedriver opening with Machine Head, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden following (in that order). It was magical and memorable for many reasons: 1) the price for that lineup, obviously 2) the venue (now demolished) was a converted...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

The biggest band I’ve ever seen at a truly small venue was BÖC at a club show…in Austin in the 1990s! It only went partially as expected. The opening act was local thrillers, Black Pearl, followed by Houston’s Galactic Cowboys- fresh off of signing a major label record deal. Black Pearl...

    Burger me!

Somewhere around here, I have a New Orleans Saints “team cookbook” from the 1980s. Apparently, everyone on the team was expected to contribute a recipe of some kind. And in its pages, the field goal/PAT kicker*, the punter, and a third guy (probably the long snapper) teamed up to present their...

    Do you observe Thanksgiving?

Gotta say that American culture is getting more globalized over time. While it’s true we’re not seeing ALL of the world’s holidays celebrated here, more of them are. Especially the religious ones. For example, for the first time EVER in my little suburb of Dallas, we could hear the sounds of...
