D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

yes, but that is also why Mearls calls them a cheap hack. The better solution is to fix the system than put a some duct tape on the worst parts. It makes for a better overall game.

    D&D 5E (2024) What's Your 2026 WotC D&D Wishlist?

I don’t think there is such a thing, at most it references some stat blocks that you need the books for, but requires beyond that… for that 2024 is not distinct enough

    D&D 5E (2024) What's Your 2026 WotC D&D Wishlist?

how so, what new rules does it require? A few new stat blocks (which also are in the SRD), anything beyond that?

Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun - First Impressions

it’s a setting book, it should not contain a large adventure. The others are more adventure book with a bit of setting information (DL certainly was). As to the one-page encounters, I find them underwhelming, as Ben said, if they do not offer something beyond what an average DM can come up with...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

in which way? by allowing for the spells to be resisted instead of having to address the underlying issue? sure, but that also is what makes it a cheap hack so there is a problem then, why not address it? address caster damage then, instead of trying to bury flaws under a pile of kludges...

Which new RPG Book(s) would like to see in 2026?

I know Rob is not interested in creating it (and maybe it is too early given what he is still working on for the Weird Wizard), but Shadow of the Demon Lord could use a 2e that consolidates things

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

what exactly is the claim you are referring to? As far as I can tell the OP contains the following quote from Mearls Did they have a better solution? Probably not or they would have used that instead. Not sure what kind of proof you need either, if the designer of the game tells you that they...

D&D General Does anyone else starting to feel like FR: HoF & FR: AiF were starved of resources because of the Core Books

it’s hard to slap someone while staying at least 15 feet away ;)

D&D General Does anyone else starting to feel like FR: HoF & FR: AiF were starved of resources because of the Core Books

I doubt it, plenty of time between these releases. I assume it got all the playtesting it was supposed to get. Not that this means much ;)

Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun - First Impressions

yeah, I am not a fan of their one-pagers for much the same reasons, apart from a decent map there really is nothing there. Anything that would make it an interesting location rather than two or three random encounters is missing and needs to be filled in by me. That is too little, you might as...

Heroforge introduces microtransaction model with Daggerheart collaboration

if our criteria for something being acceptable is that it was done somewhere before with some frequency, then we might as well call it quits because we have completely lost the plot it absolutely is

because you are already paying a subscription for the service I guess

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

attrition barely works, how much that affects your game depends on your game / players not sure how that helps with anything , but maybe it explains your take on control spells. Just ignore how they work and since the players do not care about that either, they do not ruin your game ;)

D&D General Adventurers in Faerun-The Book of Low and Mid Level Adventures?

as I said, chances are you want to play the setting not rip pieces out. You mostly will have to ignore preserving and defiling, the rest should carry over pretty well however

D&D General Adventurers in Faerun-The Book of Low and Mid Level Adventures?

Neither one was familiar to them before WotC released SJ, so the modern audience being unfamiliar with DS is not more of a hurdle for DS than it was for SJ at the time. To me the question is what is considered the more interesting setting, my guess is it is DS but I obviously could be wrong

D&D General Adventurers in Faerun-The Book of Low and Mid Level Adventures?

If I get DS chances are I want to use it as a setting and not take bits and pieces and plop them into a large desert on my campaign world. If I get SJ, the same applies, ie I want to expand my ‘home world’ with planar travel, specifically by sailing ship, to be able to reach other worlds...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I disagree with all of this ;) You would be stupid to not keep your / at least one control spell around, why waste it on mobs in the first place. Attrition barely works to begin with, so you will not wear the party down that way to the point that they used up all their spells and then walk into...

D&D General Adventurers in Faerun-The Book of Low and Mid Level Adventures?

fine, there is little interest in high level stories in D&D ;) I sure hope WotC has a better way to gauge the market demand for this than a forum discussion. I am pretty sure that their lack of high level adventures is a reflection of a company following the market. probably, it's one of those...

D&D General Adventurers in Faerun-The Book of Low and Mid Level Adventures?

eh, Spelljammer is highly specific, while it can connect to different worlds, how many people want to connect worlds, and how many out of those want to use sailships in space for that... With a little luck we will get sales numbers for SJ and DS eventually and see how they fared

D&D General Adventurers in Faerun-The Book of Low and Mid Level Adventures?

License to print money? no, it's high level adventures, lots of work for little gain... also, if you read what those people wrote, it is highly party specific, which runs counter to publishing it for a wide audience
