D&D General Dumb Idea: Hit Points As Ablative Plot Armor That Doesn't Regenerate

My point is that’s a problem with the player and not the system.

D&D General Dumb Idea: Hit Points As Ablative Plot Armor That Doesn't Regenerate

I don’t find this argument very compelling. A 15th level barbarian (who probably has around 300hp) can already do this and is much more dangerous than a first level character. What prevents most players from doing this? I have yet to play in a game where the players gamed the system and...

D&D General Dumb Idea: Hit Points As Ablative Plot Armor That Doesn't Regenerate

It’s irrelevant. Look at the current Hit Point system: when a second level adventurer retires with 15HP, does it mean they are immortal because their Hit Points never drop to 0? No. Instead they live to a ripe old age running a tavern and die of natural causes.

D&D General Dumb Idea: Hit Points As Ablative Plot Armor That Doesn't Regenerate

That’s what random charts are for! A chart of life events that whittle down your HP. J/k. This is a consideration because the idea works best if you start at first level. Random thoughts about the idea as a whole: To me, as long as you have a way of dropping unconscious, I feel like it...

D&D General Dumb Idea: Hit Points As Ablative Plot Armor That Doesn't Regenerate

@Reynard You track damage, as normal, to your Plot Points (which are finite and never heal) But to keep combats fun and exciting at all levels, you need to be able to render PCs unconscious so what if you had a stress track. This works across all levels. More deadly encounters force you...

D&D General Dumb Idea: Hit Points As Ablative Plot Armor That Doesn't Regenerate

What's your IC justification that a 20th level hero can last 20 rounds in the acid pool but 1st level ones only last one round? I'd use that same justification. As is, the 20th level character can swim for 19 rounds EVERY DAY with no ill effects. They just need a good nap between acid baths...

D&D General Dumb Idea: Hit Points As Ablative Plot Armor That Doesn't Regenerate

Everybody dies. Including the PCs. What's the difference between 12hp/level and a single pool of 240hp?

D&D General Dumb Idea: Hit Points As Ablative Plot Armor That Doesn't Regenerate

I like the idea in principle but needs refinement: 1. Characters should still be knocked unconscious. 2. Different classes get hit more. I play a wizard and almost never took hits because the wizard was squishy so I avoided direct combat and used ranged. So, the question is, should some...

Kulan: Knightfall's Crisis in Bluffside Game [OOC]

What I quoted above is from the IC There was two pocket dimensions: 1. Evil baddy had one where 1 hour in real time was one week of his time. (I think) so one day for us is 4 months of planning for him. Or maybe it was 1 hour is one day. I forget. 2. Green knight was trapped in a...

    D&D General Perception vs Investigation

In my experience, the DM just says, "You see a scrape on the floor where the bookcase swings. Pulling it open reveals a secret passage. " Most DMs don't bother with two rolls. It's usually one roll to discover the secret door. And, to be fair, I understand why: why are you belabouring the...

Pirate Borg: Buried in the Bahamas

Desiree sails the ship towards the beach. He wants to check out his loot - maybe even bury some before he gets captured for murdering someone...again.

D&D General Charisma Checks gone Horribly Wrong - Can you Relate?

I just need intent and a description of HOW they are going to do something. Trying to seduce someone, what do you do? Bring flowers, compliment them etc... Trying to intimidate? Are you threatening violence, blackmailing their family? Trying to persuade? What are you offering? Is what you're...

    D&D General Perception vs Investigation

While I think it's supposed to be used in this way, In my experience, this never happens. How I've always seen it played out is, "You succeed on your perception check and notice blood on the dress." It's almost never two rolls and, therefore, the Investigation use gets ignored and Perception...

    D&D General Perception vs Investigation

Every published adventure I’ve read uses perception to notice traps. In my opinion, that makes perception too much of a catch-all. Therefore, I use investigation for finding traps and use perception for noticing ambushes and stuff. I also use charisma investigation for gathering information

Kulan: Knightfall's Crisis in Bluffside Game [OOC]

So, I'm a bit confused by the time dilation thing in the current battle Originally, for every minute in the pocket dimension, something like a year would pass in real time. Which is why we had to protect the knight. Now it's been changed to every 1 second is 2 seconds in the pocket dimension...

(5.24 PBP) Vault Redux (OOC) Fitz's Refresher

I'm sorry for the triple post: Graze vs Mirror image. I missed. So, I assumed the graze still works and, IC, I rolled to see if it affected one of the images (which it did) so I assume one of the images goes away. BUT, My google search result implies, that because I missed, the mirror image...

(5.24 PBP) Vault Redux (OOC) Fitz's Refresher

Double post: @FitzTheRuke my character sheet still has one inspiration marked. I’m not sure if it was used to force the houndsman to reroll a successful save against the hold person and, if it wasn’t used, if it was used against the wizard’s acid attack. If not, I’ll keep it on my character...

(5.24 PBP) Vault of the Dracolich (IC) Redux

Merrick also felt slowed but when the cave was plunged in darkness, there was nothing he could do but trip over the corpse of the Houndsman. He had no idea where the enemy was last positioned and didn’t want to accidentally attack an ally. “Just give up...
