Because it worked so well for comics. That's why both Marvel and DC have had...uh...at least one "crisis" story every decade, and have begun to accelerate the pace? Yes, it can be an ask to have multiple settings. No, that is not profligate waste. "Elseworlds" is popular for a good reason...

But you refuse to read any part of the thread before saying so. No, I don't particularly see "I hate that thing!" as a cromulent bit of critique. Especially given the OP was specifically asking for advice on how to become more comfortable with modern players' tastes, making your "I just hate...

Well. That kind of makes posting in it a bit odd, doesn't it? Why participate in a conversation you have no interest in actually doing even the smallest effort to engage with? Just seems like a waste of your time (not to mention others').

D&D General Frustating Misunderstandings About Warlocks

Yep! The trick is primarily to pick the right spells for this. Non-Fey Warlocks (who can do this trick in the other direction, IIRC) would likely look to misty step, especially if they're a fragile Blade Pact user who needs to get away after smacking someone around. Hex is of course a reasonable...

But they don't have those slots. As said, I haven't watched the video. But that could be what he meant, even if he said it poorly or the like. Not having 6th-9th level slots is a significant way in which Warlocks are not the same as full casters. And yes, this does in fact matter...

D&D General Frustating Misunderstandings About Warlocks

It's been this way for at least 15 years, probably longer. AI, and before it the podcast boom, and before that the (first) YT boom, have just made it really obvious that the internet is full of false starts and misleading stuff. I actually did a report on a related topic back in 2010/2011--the...

D&D General Frustating Misunderstandings About Warlocks

Oof. That's...super unfortunate. I usually like Hat's takes on things but if he's made such egregious errors I'm...not sure I wanna watch this one. I will say, some of the things said here are crossed wires with 5.0 (e.g. the Agonizing/Repelling thing used to be tied to Eldritch Blast...

It's a very good show. I can't recommend the sequel series (Legend of Korra), but the original is genuinely great stuff. The first season does have some goofy episodes, but in fairness, it is a show targeted at like 10-14 year old children.

D&D General Example of "session zero" guidance in published adventures?

Is this what was meant by "player's guides"? Because I was expecting things like Player's Guide to Faerun (a 3.5e text) or Eberron Player's Guide (4e text), neither of which is particularly good for the kind of purpose you describe here. They're more like...the whole text? Like they describe...

Well-said. I would add a small extra though: Tell your prospective players, "Please don't start building a character until we meet up to do character creation together. I understand that folks are often drawn to character concepts very early, but it will be better for me, and I believe better...

The difference is, heroes can be in the wrong, some of the time, though they end up more right than wrong, or become so overall over time. Likewise, true unrepentant villains can be morally correct some of the time, about some things, but overall or ultimately they will end up more morally wrong...

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

There is a big, big difference between "there are heroes and villains" (which I am in favor of!) and "full-on black and white morality". (Emphasis added.) The former can have heroes who kinda suck as people, but still ultimately choose the right thing. It can have villains who are genuinely...

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

Perhaps. I find it more useful to not spread the term too thinly. Agreed. The bigger problem is that in the race to the darkest-and-edgiest, it's almost always black-and-black morality, every side is villainous, one just gets to be the designated hero. Full-on black-and-white morality is...

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

Er... You do realize that that was the way things were done...back in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, right? That's not "political correctness". That's literally conservative censorship rules. The Hayes Code and the Comics Code Authority were enforcing stuff like this. Rod Serling had to dodge the...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Not really sure why it doesn't compare. And sure, there are multiple approaches, one of which is to slash levels or the like. But there is no inherent virtue to only having 6 levels, or 10 levels, or what-have-you, rather than 20 (or 30 or whatever). I do, personally, think it would be...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Except that it was still high level play. That's part of the problem here. Folks reject certain things as being "not high level play" when they demonstrably are. As pemerton said, the difference between low and high level is communicated through increasing severity, heightened stakes (it's...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

You did not ask me, but--at least if I were the one writing it--I would expect that at the level you lose access to Animate Dead, you would have the option to pick up Greater Animate Dead if you want it. And at the level you'd lose Greater Animate Dead, you could pick up Mass Reanimate (raising...

D&D General Example of "session zero" guidance in published adventures?

If they do, I can't really see it as being more than a very limited sense. Otherwise, every setting gazetteer or the equivalent would count, which rather dilutes the meaning. The request certainly seems to be wanting specific, direct advice for how to handle the lead-up to starting play...

D&D General Wildly Diverse "Circus Troupe" Adventuring Parties

More importantly the "political correctness" thing is often used to guise over some...I mean pretty not-great positions? Sapient beings getting depicted as Pure Evil is kind of a gross thought, because that's literally how several cultures have (sometimes literally) demonized and vilified...
