DDAL New Mods! One DDAL and three CCC mods

These adventures were written for Strategicon, the subject of the thread, "Just had an awful AL con weekend." Though in honesty, the writer's criticisms seemed focused on the DMs at the con, not the adventures. -- Pauper

Two Questions about the Staff of Swarming Insects

True, but that might be a bit harder to justify -- after all, if a player moves 90 feet in a round, it only takes a tiny gust at his back to make the effective wind speed going past him only 87 feet per round, which is less than the 10mph required to dismiss the cloud. -- Pauper

Two Questions about the Staff of Swarming Insects

Checking the math: 10 miles/1 hour * 5280 ft/1 mile * 1 hour/60 min * 1 min/10 rounds = 10*5280/60*10 = exactly 88 ft/round Nice! As DM, though, I can always rule that a freak gust of wind catches you in the direction of your movement, causing the net wind speed going past you to be less than...

Two Questions about the Staff of Swarming Insects

Agreed. The Giant Insect and Insect Plague spells cast through the staff clearly are spells, though that's not in dispute. Note that Animate Dead does grant control over the animated creature for 24 hours, and requires that the spell be cast again to reassert control -- for this reason, I'd...

Price Disparity between AL and PFS at Origins.

That was pretty much exactly the scenario at GenCon -- the first GenCon with the 'D&D Experience' was also, IIRC, the last one WotC attended, and WotC provided lots of swag for the VIP tracks. When WotC wasn't at the next GenCon, there was outcry over the lack of swag, though WotC ponied up...

Free RPG Day: Starfinder Preview, TORG Quickstart, New Runequest And Women In Magic

I'll believe that GAMA doesn't want to schedule Origins too close to GenCon, if only to give their folks time to be able to attend/exhibit at both shows. But given that Origins has been in Columbus for some time now (I remember attending Origins in Columbus back in 1998) and GenCon has been in...

Two new CCC mods are up. The White Well and The Dark Hunt

I hadn't either, but apparently it was the Portland Analog Game Event. I say 'was', because on the last day of this past year's event, the founders announced that PDXAGE is 'on hold' for the forseeable future. -- Pauper

Anything specific you can share without spoiling the adventure? -- Pauper

Price Disparity between AL and PFS at Origins.

Not only were the tables largely full, but the AL events moved out of Hall D last year and into the Hyatt, and they're moving again into an even larger space in the JW Marriott this year. Safe to say that the price point is not hurting the popularity of AL events at GenCon. -- Pauper

Price Disparity between AL and PFS at Origins.

Well, I got the info from Baldman's web site; basically Dave Christ (a.k.a. the Baldman) ran the RPGA from 2002-2004, then moved to organizing RPGA events (a.k.a.: Living Greyhawk, Living Forgotten Realms, etc.). The "fiasco" you refer to was solely a reaction to the introduction of a 'VIP'...

Price Disparity between AL and PFS at Origins.

I think the Baldman folks would disagree with this assessment -- they've been running the D&D Organized Play events at both Winter Fantasy and GenCon since 2005 (well before Pathfinder was released). I'm guessing this is more the case -- they set their price and see if they fail to sell out...

Unearthed Arcana June Unearthed Arcana: Druid Shepherd, Fighter Cavalier, and Paladin of Conquest

I'll take that bet on the side that says these past two months of classes won't be in the new book -- it seems more likely that the shift from monthly to weekly Unearthed Arcanas was meant to gather rapid feedback on the subclasses intended for this book, with the shift back to monthly presaging...

Just had an awful AL con weekend

I think Jon wanted to do this, but was told he had to use the Con reg system -- though they couldn't officially stop him from also using Warhorn (at least as far as I know -- I wasn't that plugged into the process). With that said, there are advantages to using the Con reg process -- not least...

Just had an awful AL con weekend

As I understand it, the Con won't allow that -- if you're using reserved Con space (rather than just claiming some open or 'free gaming' space), you have to use the Con's registration system. And AL is big enough that just trying to commandeer some 'open gaming' space wouldn't really work. Maybe...

Just had an awful AL con weekend

Horus gives a lot of good info in his post -- all I'll add is that you should plan for at least one if not more of your players to be new or relatively new to D&D in general or 5e in particular, and be ready to help out in explaining basic things like how to calculate attack bonuses or do skill...

Just had an awful AL con weekend

Did you play the Friday night 'Bad Business in Parnast' off in the side room? That would have been me as your DM. : ) I think your criticisms of the process are spot-on; as Anthraxus notes, the powers-that-be did hear the complaints, and while my understanding is that they'll try harder next...

    Is Tabletop Gaming D&D's "Sideshow"?

I think the better analogy to make between D&D and Marvel's comic publishing business is the use of existing stories; for all the discussion of Marvel using their publishing business as 'R&D' for their next film franchise/story, it's hard to actually find evidence that recent stories and...

The New D&D Adventure Is - Tomb of Annihilation!

Given how badly the 'lock-in' aspect of Barovia went over in AL, and how any possible implementation of 'perma-death' is loudly decried among more vocal AL folks, I suspect that AL adventurers will either be curiously immune to the resurrection issue in Tomb of Annihilation, or the effect will...

    Net and Sharpshooter feat

This is incorrect -- what makes a weapon a ranged weapon is being classified as a ranged weapon. ("Every weapon is classified as either melee or ranged." Basic Rules, p.45) Since the rules for combat specify what you do with a ranged weapon, a ranged weapon without the thrown or ammunition...

Just had an awful AL con weekend

I've run and played with DMs who run at our local conventions (Con of the North, CONvergence, MarsCon), so thought I'd chime in. It is frustrating, but there's not a lot one DM can do about a noisy room experience -- everybody wants to be heard, but the louder your table gets, the harder it is...
